Indoor Storm Safety Tips

When a thunderstorm hits, lightning comes with it.  High winds and hail can also cause structural damage and cause injury. Everyone has heard about outdoor safety tips during a storm to avoid being harmed. But a common misconception is that once inside, we are absolutely safe from the dangers of lightning and other storm hazards.  Follow these safety tips to stay safe even while in your home or business:

• Remain indoors until the storm passes.
• Maintain a safe distance from windows, skylights, and doors, as storm winds and hail can shatter glass and cause injury.
• Electrical wires can conduct lightning.  Refrain from using landline telephones and other household appliances.
• Do not use running water.  The metal pipes that the water travels through are highly conductive.
