Commercial Fires And Why They Happen
3/5/2020 (Permalink)
Fires occur in a commercial setting all the time. Take simple precautions to protect yourself before disaster strikes.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, fire departments respond to over 3,300 fires in businesses each year. These fires caused over $112 million in property damage, including business interruption and lost revenue. If you own a business or own a commercial property, you should be aware of where the fire risks lie, and take preventative measures to reduce those risks.
Similar to our homes, a majority of fires in a commercial structure happen as a result of cooking. Ensure that smoke detectors are functional, and that batteries are replaced on a regular basis. Also make sure that there are working fire extinguishers available, and they are not expired. This is especially important in areas of your business that have a kitchen or other heat-producing appliances.
Improper knowledge and lack of knowledge is the other prevalent cause of fire damage in businesses. To combat this, conduct routine fire safety meetings. Teach employees and staff proper fire safety, as well as informing them where fire extinguishers are located.
