Spring Season Exterior Maintenance Checklist

4/12/2022 (Permalink)

The spring season is right around the corner, so it’s time to assess your property for lingering issues caused by winter weather.  This should be done for homes and businesses alike.  When the temperature begins to rise, thawing occurs, so the issues tend to show themselves right about now.  Leaving these issues alone may lead to potential damage down the road.  Follow this checklist to insulate your property against springtime damage.

1.) Roof Check

A solid rooftop is one of the main pieces of your home. Guaranteeing it is strong and watertight is vital to keeping your whole home dry. Leaks can be caused by even the smallest gaps or tears in your shingles.  Inspect your entire roof to ensure that there are no weak areas like rips, tears, or missing shingles.  Repair anything as soon as possible.  You should also clean your gutters of any debris or obstructions.  This will allow your roof drainage system to function as intended.

2.) Structure Check

Check for any issues in the foundation, both inside and outside.  These can easily let excess water in.  Exterior walls should be checked as well, this time for missing siding, cracked siding, or compromised areas around your windows.  Make any necessary repairs, such as caulking around windows or doors.  Not only can moisture enter through these gas, but even slight airflow can affect your home heating or cooling costs.

Water Loss In A Senior Living Community

3/24/2022 (Permalink)

For the most part, senior living communities are drama free.  But that was not the case recently, when a sprinkler head burst at a facility due to a malfunction.  Water began to pour out of the sprinklers on the third floor and accumulate.  The pooling water, with nowhere to go, seeped down to the second floor, at which point building maintenance was alerted. The amount of water was too much for the on-site staff to handle so they called SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport to help with the issue.

We arrived quickly with the necessary tools and equipment to efficiently remediate the damage.  First, our technicians extracted as much water as possible from both the second and third floors.  Next, our team set a network of air movers and dehumidifiers to maximize airflow and drying potential.  A day or two later, once the moisture was back to satisfactory levels, we began to address any structural damage that had occurred, like affected wood and drywall, as well as flooring.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of storm damage. Condo Owners: Who Is Responsible For Storm Damage?

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

During and after a storm event, the building that you live in may suffer from storm-related water damage.  If your unit suffers damage as a result, you may think that the HOA will be covering the cost of repairs.  You may be wrong.  On the other hand, you may also be wrong if you think that you are on the hook.  Read below to see how these situations can play out.

What The HOA Is Responsible For

Normally, the HOA is responsible for maintaining everything other than individual units.  This means that everything outside your unit should be their problem.  For example, water damage caused by a roof leak would usually be covered by the HOA.

What You Are Responsible For

Unit owners are usually responsible for maintaining their own condo interior and systems that exclusively service their unit.  These are things like water pipes and plumbing drains. While not usually affected by storm damage, these areas are usually the responsibility of the condo unit owner to fix.

You can mitigate your risk for financial burden by carrying an insurance policy that covers water and storm damage.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of storm damage. Does Your Office Need A Deep Clean?

3/7/2022 (Permalink)

Spring is basically here.  Temperatures are on the rise, and some trees are starting to show buds.  So it may be time to consider a deep clean of your office.  There are a number of reasons commercial clients choose to have their spaces cleaned professionally around this time of year.

COVID and other decontamination

This is a great time to push the reset button on the microscopic cleanliness of your office.  The high sickness season is almost over, so start the year off fresh by having your office deep cleaned.  This service includes all high-touch areas like doorknobs, counters, and desks.

Aesthetics

Sometimes, businesses would like deep cleaning for cosmetic reasons.  No major damage event has occurred, but they may still be a good candidate for deep cleaning services.  During the winter, salt and sand are tracked in, which can give carpeting discoloration.  Sometimes dirt and dust become trapped in the fibers of carpeting, and vacuuming alone cannot fix the issue.

General cleaning

Sometimes, even with our best efforts, offices can get cluttered.  The culprit could be files, boxes, or many other items.  We can come into your office and remove any unwanted materials so that you have more space.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of property damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their business property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Commercial Ice Blasting Services

3/3/2022 (Permalink)

Have you ever heard of ice blasting?

If not, it is a service that has many applications in a commercial setting.  Similar to sandblasting, millions of tiny particles are propelled out of a wand onto a surface.  The tiny particles act as an abrasion agent that can remove a multitude of materials from a surface.  SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport offers this service to businesses for both emergency and nonemergency situations.

Emergency

After certain property damage occurs, surfaces inside your business may need cleaning that cannot be achieved by normal cleaning procedures.  Ice blasting is a great option in this case. One such situation is after a fire.  Smoke and soot residue may settle on wood beams or brick walls that are otherwise unaffected by the fire.  In this case, we may use ice blasting to clean the surface of the offending odor and discoloration.

Non Emergency

Sometimes, businesses would like deep cleaning for cosmetic reasons.  No major damage event has occurred, but they may still be a good candidate for ice blasting services.  We can use this technology on building fronts and facades, as well as the sidewalk near the storefront.  In this way, we have cleaned gum and other debris from many municipal sidewalks throughout Fairfield County.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of property damage. Wastewater Cleanup In Bridgeport

2/25/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most potentially harmful water damages is wastewater damage.  On top of the water causing damage, the harmful bacteria within the water can cause adverse health effects if you come into contact with it.  Often termed “Category 3” water, it can contain E. coli and other bad bacteria that you should avoid at all costs.

This is why it is important to call in the assistance of a professional water damage remediation company.  Both to combat the negative effects of water damage, and to do it in a safe way that eliminates the risk of contamination to you and your family or employees.  Our SERVPRO technicians are trained in proper remediation techniques, and are equipped with the best tools in the industry.

Property Damage From Lightning Strikes

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

Although rare, lightning strikes can cause significant property damage, both from the strike itself, as well as resulting side effects.

Direct damage

The physical impact and power of a lightning strike can do serious physical damage to the structure of a home or business.  Lightning can fracture concrete, brick, and stone upon impact.  It can also shred through wood, as it has a high water content.  Roofs and foundations are the main areas that can be detrimental if struck.  Other non-structural elements such as windows can be broken with this type of damage.  The electricity from the lightning can also spark a fire that can get out of hand quickly.  Electronics in the home or business may be irreparably broken by a lightning strike as well.

Indirect damage

If lightning strikes your home or business, and the electrical system is affected, it could cause surges in power that can lead to overheating and sparking.  This can start a fire within the home or business.  If structural elements are affected, like a roof or foundation, water damage will be easier to suffer in the future. After a lightning strike, it is important to have your electrical system inspected for damage by a professional.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of storm damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their home or business property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Low Intensity Storm Risk

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

Storms come in many different sizes and intensities.  At the worst, storms can destroy property through gusts of wind, torrential downpour of rain, or through the sheer weight of snow.  Homeowners know how to spot these damages, in part, because they are easy to detect, and are brought on during an obvious storm.

But damage can occur even when a storm is mild.  Sometimes this damage can be worse, as it can go unseen and undetected for a while.  In a light rain storm, ground water can rise just enough to seep into your basement.  If gutters are not properly attached, even a small storm can cause a significant amount of damage.  If your roof has a small leak, you may not notice water pouring into your home, but water can trickle in and cause major damage over time.

This type of damage, if unnoticed and remediated, can lead to structural damage and mold growth down the line.  After a light storm, you should be in the habit of checking areas that you may know to be problem areas.  It is also a good idea to routinely inspect your property to ensure that no weak areas are present.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their home or business property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Why Fire Damage And Water Damage Go Hand-In-Hand

2/16/2022 (Permalink)

When you have a fire in your home or business, the first order of business is putting the fire out.  This will limit the extent of the fire damage, whether it be burnt structure material, smoke odors, or discoloration on the walls and ceiling.

When the fire department is called, this is their job - to extinguish the fire.  And they will do that by any means possible.  Often, this means using hundreds of gallons of water to stop the flames.  Which is why when you suffer any significant fire damage, you will most likely have some water damage to go along with it.

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport works with homeowners and business owners alike to navigate this situation; one where there are multiple types of property damage at the same time.  We understand the intricacies of remediating dual damages, and are well-versed in this process.

Is DIY Restoration Cheaper Than Hiring A Professional?

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

When you have damage at your home or business, you have a choice to make.  This is because the sooner the remediation begins, the less the damage is allowed to permeate the physical structure and items within.  Often people will be overwhelmed and attempt to fix the damage themselves.  But is it cheaper to fix it yourself, or should you hire a professional.

It is not always cheaper to hire someone.  For instance, if there is a small pool of water on the floor, or only a small area affected by smoke. But any damage that is on the larger side is almost more cost effective to let a professional company remediate.

You may spend time and money attempting to fix the issue, only to temporarily fix it, or having to call a professional down the road.  Furthermore, you can suffer adverse health effects if you try to remediate damage like smoke and mold without the proper tools or knowledge.  You may actually make the problem worse by not fixing it the right way.

Secondary damage, such as mold growth after water damage is very likely when the initial damage is not fixed properly.  In this case, you may end up spending more money by trying to fix it yourself.

Cooking Fire Prevention

1/28/2022 (Permalink)

Cooking and kitchen fires account for thousands of residential fires every year.  That trend continues to be accurate throughout Fairfield County as well.  We respond to these types of fires very often.  We’ll give you some of the reasons that these fires occur, and how to take steps to reduce your risk of them happening in your home.

Cooking Appliances - Unmaintained appliances are a leading cause of kitchen fires in Fairfield County. Loose or frayed wires, improper use, and food left unattended can all cause appliances to be the start of a cooking fire.

Excess Oil or Grease - Some people will attempt to use too much oil or grease when they cook, which can lead to bodily harm and grease fires.  When not properly dealt with, these fires can be hard to put out and may spread very quickly.

Spills - When food particles from earlier cooking fall under burners or to the bottom of the oven, they can spontaneously combust, starting a fire.  These flames will develop quickly, and can lead to serious damage.

Tips for prevention:

  • Unplug countertop appliances when they are not being used. Inspect cords periodically.
  • Never stray too far from the kitchen while you are cooking.
  • Check the oven while in use, and use a timer so you don't forget food that could potentially burn and ignite.
  • Use an appropriate amount of oil and grease.
  • Keep flammable items away from cooking areas, and routinely remove old food particles from the area.
  • Keep children a solid distance from the kitchen, for their own safety, and so they cannot accidentally cause a fire.

It is important to contact a fire damage restoration professional as soon as the flames are extinguished to help limit and remediate the damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of fire or smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Fire Safety For Kids

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

The winter months are cold, and there’s no way around it.  And because of this, we want to be as warm and cozy as possible.  In our quest to maintain a comfortable environment, many residents of Fairfield County turn to heating methods like fireplaces and wood stoves.  These methods are relatively safe when operated correctly. But even if we practice safety, there is still a chance that a fire may break out.  This is why the winter months account for most of the annual home fires reported by property owners.

Protecting children when these heating methods are being used is paramount.  Keeping kids away from open flames and hot surfaces is one factor.  The other factor is preventing children from starting accidental fires on their own.  According to the U.S. Fire Administration, over $250 million in property damage occurred due to fires that started because of a child.

  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.  You can place them high up, or a secure location so that children cannot get to them.
  • Monitor children around the fireplace or wood stove.  This is for their own safety, and so they do not put or knock anything flammable into open flames.
  • You can purchase flameless candles that don't even require any fire to work.

Space Heater Safety

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Whether at home or at work, many people start to use space heaters to supplement their main heating system when the weather gets cold.  This is especially true when a central air system is not present.  Space heaters offer a relatively efficient way to warm the surrounding area quickly, which is why so many people use them. But they do come with some risks if not used properly, which contribute to the statistics that show that heating fires are the highest during the winter months.

Space Heater Best Practices:

  • Put the space heater on a surface that is rigid, flat, and nonflammable.  This will ensure that it has a low chance of tipping over.
  • Establish a 3-foot kid- and pet-free zone around the heater, and never put a space heater in a child’s room.
  • Place the heater in open areas to minimize the risk of surrounding things like furniture and bedding from catching on fire.
  • Never use a space heater in an area that contains paint, gasoline, or other flammable liquids.
  • Turn the heater off whenever you are not present.  You can even unplug it for extra precaution.
  • Prevent potential overheating by only plugging the heater into an outlet where nothing else is plugged in.

It is important to contact a fire and smoke damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any smoke damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Check Your Fire Alarms This Winter

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

The winter months are cold, and there’s no way around it.  And because of this, we want to be huddled inside and warm.  In our quest to maintain a warm temperature, many residents of Fairfield County turn to heating methods like fireplaces and wood stoves.  These methods are relatively safe when operated correctly. But even if we practice safety, there is still a chance that a fire may break out.  This is why the winter months account for most of the annual home fires reported by property owners.

That is why we’re reminding you to check your fire and smoke alarms before anything happens.  If you have battery powered alarms, replace the batteries, especially if you haven't done so in a while. If your alarms are hard wired, test them to ensure that they are in working order.  Having working fire and smoke alarms is an important defense against property damage, but more importantly, for keeping you and your family safe.

It is important to contact a certified fire damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who need fire damage restoration at their home or business property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

January Rain Can Bring Heavy Damage

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

After a serious cold spell that saw temperatures dip into the single digits, the unusually warm weather is back. And now that it is warm again, all the precipitation is in the form of rain.  Most residents of Fairfield County don’t think of storm water damage as a typical winter event.  But just this past weekend, we saw at least a dozen homes and businesses that needed water damage remediation due to the heavy rainfall.

We were prepared for the weather, and had crews on standby, ready to be dispatched to the places that needed damage restoration.  For example, we sent technicians to a condo complex that suffered a leak in the roof that led to water pouring into their lobby.  We also responded to a local restaurant that had groundwater in their dining room.

While we would think snow and ice would be the major storm events causing damage right now, the temperature is making it so rainstorms are the leading cause of storm damage.

The Difference Between Clean, Disinfect & Sanitize

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

With the global pandemic flaring up again, and Fairfield County experiencing high rates of infection, we all want our living and working spaces to be free of any contaminants.  When you do any research about ways to do this, you are undoubtedly confronted by products and methods that use the words “clean,” “disinfect,” and “sanitize.”  But these terms are not interchangeable.  Read further so you know exactly how effective a certain product or method is.

Cleaning - Provides surface cleaning, while only removing dirt, debris, bacteria, viruses, and fungus while using water and an added detergent.  Examples of products in this category: Pledge and dish detergent

Sanitizing - Greatly reducesReduces but does not eliminate all bacteria, viruses, and fungus on a treated surface. 99.9% reduction in contaminants must be demonstrated for a product to be classified as a sanitizer. Examples of products in this category: hand sanitizer and Wet Ones wipes

Disinfecting - Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill, destroy, or inactivate infectious or other organic contaminants. Examples of products in this category: Clorox disinfecting wipes and Lysol disinfecting spray

It is important to contact a certified cleaning professional as soon as you are alerted to a positive case. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who need cleaning and disinfecting at their business property.  Professionally trained SERVPRO technicians perform cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection services according to CDC standards with EPA approved cleaning products.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

One Way NOT To Heat Your Home This Winter

1/10/2022 (Permalink)

Now that 2022 is here, it seems like the cold weather is here to stay for the season. With temperatures set to dip into the teens this week, homeowners will definitely be turning their heat up a little higher. Some homeowners, in an attempt to be frugal and efficient, will try to use other heat sources to provide any extra warmth during these cold months.  But as we see every year, these methods may lead to fire and smoke damage, and even injury to the inhabitants.

One such method is using your oven to provide an extra heat source.  This is unsafe for many reasons:

  • If you have a gas stove, this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning
  • A gas stove can also lead to fire, as the flammable gas is leaking out into the living space
  • If you have an electric stove, it can overheat due to prolonged use, and start a fire that way
  • Any open or exposed heat source can be a hazard for children or pets in the home
  • Beyond safety, it is much more efficient to run a small space heater than an oven

Although Fairfield County hasn’t experienced extended periods of freezing weather yet this season, colder temperatures are sure to be right around the corner.  With colder temperatures comes the threat of frozen pipes, and in turn, water damage.  Water can cause costly damage that may be overwhelming to deal, especially during the holiday season and beyond.  Use these simple tips to save yourself the hassle.

Have Your Pipes Insulated - Talk to a plumber who may recommend that you insulate some or all of your water pipes to prevent them from freezing.

Control Your Thermostat - If the temperature in your home or office stays above a certain temperature, your pipes will be far less likely to freeze.

Keep A Drip Flowing - Frozen pipes occur when the water inside turns to ice, causing the pipe to expand.  If you keep your faucets and showers dripping, the water will flow, making it far less likely to freeze.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Frozen Pipe Season Is Commencing

12/10/2021 (Permalink)

Fairfield County is starting to get colder.  As we cling to the warmer weather, property owners have to keep in mind the potential water damage that can result from freezing temperatures.

Water can exist in three states (liquid, solid, and gas).  The water in our pipes is obviously in the liquid form, but can freeze to the solid form when temperatures fall below a certain temperature.  This change in temperature can affect the contraction and expansion of both the water and the pipe itself.  When the pipe changes too much, it has the potential to burst.  If this happens, water will inevitably pour from wherever the pipe is into all levels of the structure below.

The faster that remediation begins, the less the damage will be.  As time passes, mold will begin to develop, which also needs to be removed.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. Winter Carbon Monoxide Safety

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

One of the byproducts of fire is carbon monoxide, a potentially harmful airborne gas. During winter months, the risk of sickness and injury increase because more heating elements are being used.  Use these safety tips to make sure that your winter heat stays safe:

  • First and foremost, install a carbon monoxide detector and alarm if you don’t already have one.  These will detect harmful levels and alert you so you are safe and can address the problem quickly.
  • Service any and all heat-producing appliances in your home on a regular basis.
  • Never use a gas oven for heating your home.
  • If you lose power, operate your generator a safe distance from the house.
  • If you like to warm up your car in the morning, pull it out of the attached garage before letting it run.

It is important to contact a fire damage restoration professional as soon as the fire is over to help limit and remediate the damage. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of fire or smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

5 Tips for Driving After Heavy Rain

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

Heavy storms are an inevitability during the summer season.  Rainfall can accumulate quickly, which can lead to property damage to homes, businesses, and vehicles.  This can also cause adverse travel conditions.  While you should avoid driving in flood conditions, you may already be on the road when this weather occurs.  Keep these tips in mind so that you can stay safe under these hazardous conditions.

Avoid Pooling Water

Do your best to drive around areas of the road where water has begun to accumulate.  When the depth reaches .5 inches or more, hydroplaning becomes a very real risk.  Your car can even begin to float in six inches of water, especially if it is moving water.

Drive Slowly

This seems like an obvious tip, but many people don't realize just how slow they need to go to avoid losing traction on the roadway.  A maximum of five miles per hour is recommended to maintain control of your vehicle.  Slower speeds, such as one or two MPH, should be used when entering or exiting a roadway.  This is because during acceleration and deceleration, the risk of losing control is greater.

Drive Where The Water Is Most Shallow

Most paved roads have a slight grade in them to help rainwater and other debris flow off of the surface.  This can be used to your advantage during heavy rainfall and roadway flooding.  Drive as close to the center of the road as possible, as this is where the water will be the least deep.

If the heavy rainfall and water happen to also affect your home or business, SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport can help return you to preloss condition.

Customer Satisfaction After Commercial Cleaning

5/24/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport was recently contacted by a business owner regarding water damage.  We were told that a toilet on the second floor had overflowed, which soaked the bathroom floor, and poured down into the first floor.  This had saturated the initial flooring, the first floor ceiling, and some of the first floor wall beneath the toilet.

We sent out one of our project managers to meet with the business owner, and then quickly dispatched a crew of technicians to remediate the damage.  We extracted all of the standing water first.  Because the water originated from the toilet, the potential for harmful bacteria spreading is high.  We removed all of the affected flooring and drywall to eliminate that risk. Then we thoroughly dried the area.  Our reconstruction team replaced and finished the job to preloss condition.

A couple days after the job was done, the customer wrote us a quick note to thank us for the great job we did:

“It was nice to meet you this week and thank you for coming out to assess the work that needed to be done. I wanted to let you know that the two SERVPRO employees that came out to do the work did an excellent job and were very thorough in their work.  Thank you!”

Protect Your Business From Mold

4/14/2021 (Permalink)

Save yourself the headache!

With the weather beginning to warm up, mold will inevitably become an issue for many business owners in Fairfield County around this time.  Every year, moisture that was frozen before has thawed, and is now a perfect condition for mold growth.  Not only can it cause health effects, but it can pose an issue for the structure of your building.  But you can try to prevent this growth by following some simple tips.

Maintain Air Filters

Having your HVAC system cleaned regularly can go a long way to preventing potential mold growth.  Cleaning the vents, drainage pans, and hoses out will keep them from allowing mold to develop.

Limit Moisture

Keep your business dry as much as possible. If moisture is a known issue, you can run a dehumidifier.  If your business is ventilated by an air system, keep that running to cycle out any moisture.  Make sure that any structural leaks are sealed immediately.

Clean Your Carpets

Many people do not consider carpets to be a potential contributor to mold growth.  But carpets and padding are very porous, which can harbor mold spores.  If moisture is present, the mold spores can grow quickly and cause issues.  Have your carpets cleaned regularly by a professional cleaning company.

If you notice mold growth or smell a musty odor in your business, reach out immediately.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial or residential odor elimination needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport should be your first call. Sewer Backup Prevention Is Important

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Avoid the nasty mess

When we think of sewage backup, we immediately think of what could come back up from our toilets.  But this is only one place that it could come from.  Any place that is connected to your water line is connected, and thus, can be the source of this type of damage.  Bathtubs, sinks, and showers are all common places this can occur, and cause damage.  The water that comes back up through the drains can range from just dirty water to more severely contaminated water.  There are a few basic things that you can do to lower the risk of a sewage backup in your home or business.

Keep Your Drains Oil Free

Don’t pour oil down your drains.  It makes other things like hair and food less likely to drain properly, leading to clogs.  Pour oil into a disposable container once cooled, and then throw it away.

Practice Sewer Maintenance

Have your septic drained regularly.  This does not have to happen often, but it will prevent backups by keeping the tank at reasonable levels.

Remove Trees And Other Obstructions

If there are trees that are close to your sewer line or septic tank, consider having them removed.  Roots can grow into the line, causing major obstructions.  You can also have the lines replaced with plastic ones if your lines are older. These are more resistant to damage.

Whatever causes sewer backup damage, SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport will handle it.  We have decades of experience, and are available 24/7 to assist you.  Please call us if you have damage at your home or business at 203.324.1642.

You Have Storm Damage

3/22/2021 (Permalink)

Now what?

There are many ways that a storm can impact your Trumbull or Monroe home.  You need to know what to look for and steps to take after the weather has made its way away from your home.

Safety first

When you see the state of your home after storm damage, it is easy to focus on the issues that you see.  But you need to ensure the safety of your family first.  Make sure that everyone is safe and uninjured.  Tend to any health issues at this point.  To lessen the risk of injury, stay away from windows and doors as the storm is occurring in your area.

Inspect utility lines

After the storm has ended or moved along, inspect your gas, water, and electricity lines for any damage. If you observe damage and are able to turn off the lines safely, do so at this point.  This will mitigate the risk for more damage to your home or business. It will also limit the risk of injury from any issues like a fire starting or electrocution from exposed wiring.

Call the professionals

You should call your insurance company to advise them of the situation, and begin the claims process.  This is the first step to getting your home restored to preloss condition. Next, you should call a remediation company like SERVPRO.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your storm damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport should be your first call. Why You Might Want To Invest In A Fire Sprinkler Or Suppression System For Your Business

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

On average, businesses that have a sprinkler or suppression system in place suffer 50% less damage than those who do not.

When a fire breaks out, it always has the chance of spreading.  Depending on the conditions and location, this spread can happen extremely quickly.  The key to limiting damage is to limit the rate that the fire grows, and how much ground it can cover.  You can achieve this through the use of a fire extinguisher, but sometimes that is not enough.  That is where a sprinkler or suppression system comes in.

These systems work by releasing water, chemicals, or other agents that work to stop the fire in its tracks. As soon as the system senses a fire, it springs into action.  This not only slows or stops damage from occurring at all, but also gives you and your employees time to evacuate the building to ensure everyone’s safety.  The damage suffered by businesses without any system is almost always more than those with a system installed.  If you don't have a system, you may want to invest.  If you do have a system, make sure that it is inspected on a regular basis so that you know it will perform when needed.

Storefront Damage Remediation

3/5/2021 (Permalink)

Many businesses throughout Bridgeport, Trumbull, and Monroe are located in close proximity to each other.  Many retail spaces can be found in shopping centers, where storefronts are right next to their neighbor.  When damage occurs in one or more of these spaces, remediation efforts must all be done through one or two entry points.  This is different from residential settings and roomier retail settings, where restoration technicians can gain entry from many points.

These very limitations are why SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has equipped themselves with the tools to get the job done.  We have extractors that do not need to be brought into the business, as they reside on our vehicles.  This gets by the limitation that a smaller door presents. We also have smaller units that can fit in tighter spaces, which we can carry from place to place.

We also pride ourselves on our ability to handle damage that affects multiple storefronts at one time.  We have specialized equipment that can remove water and moisture that can extract from walls and floors.  This allows us to get you back in business as soon as possible.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

  • It has been more than five years since your last cleaning

Keep Yourself Safe During A Snowstorm

2/18/2021 (Permalink)

Snow looks pretty as it falls, but can cause many issues inside and outside your home.

Keep exterior vents clear - Make sure to clear any snow or ice buildup from exterior vents.  If it accumulates, your furnace runs the risk of overheating and shutting off.  This could make safety a concern, and could lead to pipes freezing.

Keep your roof clear - If it is safe to do so, clear off excessive snow from your roof.  This will alleviate the risk of heavy buildup, which causes structural damage.  You can also keep the roof warm from the underside with heaters and fans to prevent ice dams.

Locate emergency supplies - If your power goes out, you need to have basic supplies on hand.  Also, do your best to keep pipes warm so they don't freeze while the power is out.

Protect yourself by calling SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport. You can reach us at 203.324.1642 at any time for immediate assistance.

How To Know If Winter Storms Have Caused Frozen Pipes

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

Winter weather and storm events can cause many issues.  A frozen pipe is one issue that you can possibly diagnose before it causes any major issues.

Indicators Of A Frozen Pipe:

Temperature - A pipe is in danger of freezing when the temperature drops below 32 degrees.  If the temperature outside gets this low, be aware of pipes freezing.  Insulated pipes have a better chance of weathering lower temperatures.

Frost - Some pipes in your home can be seen, like under sinks in your kitchen or bathroom. If these pipes have ice or frost on the xterior, they may be freezing or already frozen.

Smell - A freezing pipe means that ice has formed inside the pipe, and water cannot pass through.  Similar to water, odors cannot pass through, and will instead flow back into your home or business.  If you notice a strange smell, your pipes may be frozen.

No Water - The telltale sign of a frozen pipe is no water flow when a faucet is turned on.  Ice is blocking the flow, so no water will run out of any taps.

If you notice any of the above signs, take action immediately. Shut the water off to alleviate pressure, and warm pipes with fans.  If your pipes are frozen already and do end up bursting, we are available to respond quickly.

Now you know that time is of the essence when you experience water damage at your home or business. Protect yourself by calling SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport. You can reach us at 203.324.1642 at any time for immediate assistance.

What If Water Gets Under Your Carpet?

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

When you suffer water damage at your home or business, it can be a very overwhelming experience.  Everything from ceilings, walls, and floors can become soaked.  One area that can cause extra concern is carpeted rooms.  These areas often represent higher value floor coverings, and you want them salvaged when possible.

That’s where SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport come in. Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting, or expensive area rugs, we have solutions for both situations.

Wall-To-Wall Carpeting

When your carpeted rooms become saturated, we can get under the carpet with our powerful air movers.  We place our fans at the perimeter of the room, and under the corners of the carpeting. This allows air movement and drying to occur across the entirety of the room.  It also ensures that the subfloor will be dried along with carpeting. Our skilled technicians will cut the carpet at the edge of the room, so that it can be reattached after drying is completed.  If any discoloration has occurred as a result of the water damage, we can clean the carpet onsite as well.

Area Rugs

Area rugs are not cheap, so we do our best to save them when possible.  When we arrive on scene, our skilled technicians determine the best plan of action. If the rug can be dried in your home or business, we will place fans under the carpet so both sides are equally dried.  If the carpet is heavily damaged and needs more serious cleaning, we can bring it back to our facility.  There, it can be dried and cleaned in a thorough manner.

Keeping Up With The Industry In A Pandemic

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

Providing the best service to our customers and community is so important to us. That’s why we routinely enroll our technicians in continuing education and certification classes.  This allows our crew to know about the latest and most effective methods and tools in the restoration industry.

Before this time last year, our technicians went to a classroom setting to get this information.  But then 2020 happened, and all in-person learning ceased, for good reason.

But residential and commercial emergencies don’t stop for a pandemic, so we needed to keep ourselves abreast of the pertinent information another way.  We have enrolled many of our employees in virtual learning courses, so that they can provide you with cutting edge service amidst the current climate.  Some of our newer technicians have even become professionally certified in water remediation during the pandemic via online learning.

What Type Of Smoke Alarm Do You Have?

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

We all know that having working smoke alarms installed in the proper locations is crucial for residential and workplace safety.  But not all alarms are the same.  One main difference that they have is how they are powered. And how they are powered dictates their maintenance schedule.  Learn more about the three types of smoke alarms below.

Conventional Batteries

These units use regular batteries that many other household items use.  This makes them easy to maintain, as changing the batteries is as easy as changing them in your TV remote.  These units will beep when batteries are low.  Even if you don't hear the beep, you should check these units monthly to ensure that they are in working order.

Long Life Batteries

These alarms are a great middle ground between cost and ease of use.  Once you buy them, all you need to do is place them in the correct location in your home or business.  The batteries in these units are designed to last ten years, at which point, you replace with a new unit.  Of course, faulty units can occur, so you need to regularly test these alarms as well.

Hardwired Alarms

These units are by far the easiest to maintain, but not everyone can use them.  They also require professional installation or someone with electrical knowledge.  These units are wired directly into a building electrical system, where they draw their power.  These units should come with a battery backup, to ensure that they still maintain properly if the power goes out, or is otherwise compromised.

Ice Dams Can Cause Serious Problems

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

We all like to stay warm during cold weather.  But did you know that keeping our homes heated can lead to an issue known as an ice dam.

Ice dams occur when indoor heating rises throughout your home, warming your roof. Ice and snow on the warmer portion of the roof melts and trickles downward until it hits the colder part of your roof, where it refreezes.  This is known as an ice dam.Ice dams present many potential serious issues to your home or business. If the conditions become too drastic, your gutters and shingles may come off, and water can flow back into your house.  If the water sits, it can soak wood, insulation, and drywall, leading to mold growth and mildew odors.

Common signs of an ice dam are icicle and ice buildup around the edge of your roof.  If you observe these conditions, you may want to take steps to relieve the stress on your roof. You do not want to use too much force, as your roof may become damaged.

  • While it may seem counterintuitive, blowing cold air with a fan can help freeze exterior water in place.  This will prevent it from running and weighing down your gutters.
  • Remove excess snow from your roof.  Use caution when doing this. If on a ladder, use caution.  If you remove snow and ice from the ground, be careful not to get hit by falling material.

If you identify that you have an ice dam at your business, follow the above steps.  If damage has already occurred, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We have decades of experience remediating damage from ice dams.  We can be reached 24/7 at 203.324.1642.

Have A Fire Action Plan

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

Once someone knows how to properly operate a fire extinguisher, they should then also be trained to follow fire safety protocol. Such training should enable anyone to be able to:

A fire action plan is crucial for any home or business in the event of a fire.  It can save lives.  Take the time to make sure that everyone is on the same page, and knows what the plan is when danger occurs.  This is especially important when children are involved.

  • Alert others
    • If you are at work, pull the fire alarm.
    • If you are at home, make sure that others in the house are aware of the danger
  • Call the fire department
  • Assess the situation
    • If the flame is small, you can attempt to put it out with a fire extinguisher. If the flame is large, or multiple areas are affected, get everyone out immediately.
  • Evacuate the building
    • Plan an evacuation route in advance.  If this is for your home, you can put in on the fridge, so that kids see it often.
  • Wait until the fire department clears you to go back inside

How To Operate A Fire Extinguisher

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

Whether at home or at work, the occurrence of a fire is more common than you think. Similarly, a really great way to be prepared in both places is to have a fire extinguisher, and have the knowledge to use it. A commonly taught (and easy to remember) method is the P.A.S.S. method.  Each letter corresponds to an action that leads to proper use.

(P)ull the pin on the extinguisher. This will break the anti-tampering seal.

(A)im the nozzle of the hose.  You want to aim for the base of the flames.

(S)queeze the handle.

(S)weep the nozzle from side to side.  Hit all base areas of the fire.  If the flames are not extinguished, aim and squeeze again.

In the event that a fire becomes too large, you need to call 911 to get immediate help.  Once a fire gets out of hand, safety is the only concern.  Get you and your family or coworkers out of the building as soon as possible.

An important thing to note is that fire extinguishers don't last forever. A good one will last between 5 and 15 years.  Make sure to keep one that is safely within these ranges on hand.

Recently, a Fairfield County resident accidentally drove their car into their garage.  The collision caused massive damage, both structurally and cosmetically.  The homeowner needed immediate service to preserve their home.  SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport responded quickly, and performed a number of services to ensure no further damage would occur.

That night, we ensured that the garage was secure.  This meant reinforcing the structure with supports so that it would not sag or fall down. We also boarded up the space to prevent everything from weather and animals from getting in.  We also cleaned debris from the area to prepare for the reconstruction phase of the process.

Over the next week, our team rebuilt and finished the garage.  We rebuilt the damaged walls, and installed drywall on the inside and siding on the outside.  We replaced the windows and installed trim.  The before and after can be seen in the photo.

3 Winter Storm Effects That Can Cause Damage

1/13/2021 (Permalink)

We haven’t had many severe winter storms this year, so residents of Fairfield County have not had to deal with a ton of storm-related damage.  But what better time to learn about the types of damage that can occur, then when you have the time to prepare and be ready.  Even one snowstorm can cause a number of unique problems for homeowners.

Ice Buildup - Whether on a roof or gutters, any significant buildup can occur.  This is called an ice dam, and can cause a couple real issues.  The weight alone can cause roof damage, and cause gutters to fall down.

Snow Buildup - Similar to ice, the sheer weight of snow can cause a roof to sag or buckle.

Melting - When the above two conditions are present when temperatures warm, the water can cause flooding.  When ice or snow on the roof melts, it can leak through, causing water damage and mold on that level.  If the water pours to the ground, it can make its way into the house through the lower level.

Just one winter storm can cause various styles of damage in your home or business. If any damage occurs, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We are available 24/7 to assess the situation and begin remediation immediately.

Maintain Good Air Quality In Your Business

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

Keeping air quality at a good level is important for your employees' and coworkers' overall health.  Contaminants in the air can lead to a number of adverse health effects. The number of contaminants drastically rises in the wake of a flood, where mold can grow in damp conditions. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “the term ‘sick building syndrome’ is used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified. The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout the building. In contrast, the term ‘building related illness’ is used when symptoms of diagnosable illness are identified and can be attributed directly to airborne building contaminants.”

As you can see, the air quality in your business can directly affect people’s health. This is especially true in the present, as many people are concerned with dangerous airborne particles. In order to protect your people, you can take steps to control the level of moisture and subsequent mold after any water damage with just a few key steps.

  • Make sure the original source of the water is fixed, whether it was a pipe, the roof, etc.
  • Keep the areas around air conditioners and humidifiers free from moisture and pooling water
  • If any mold is found, call a remediation company immediately

If you experience any water damage or mold damage, please call the professionals at SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport as soon as possible.  Time is of the essence to keep your business air quality at safe levels.

How Can You Limit Potential Flood Damage?

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

Prior to serious water-related weather events, you should find a way to restrict potential flood damage. From small steps to larger actions, there are many things you can do to limit the extent of destruction, should you suffer water damage in your home or business. Consider doing any number of the following to insulate yourself from the worst-case scenario:

Stopping your utilities prior to leaving your home - If you leave your home for an extended period of time, you can shut these off.

Protecting your house from the ground up - Adding water-proofing to your foundation can limit the amount of water that comes in/

Checking your roof for leaks and weak spots - Prior to the winter, inspect the roof to make sure that water is not getting in.

Cleaning out your gutters - After the fall season, leaves and other deposits can block the flow of water, which can run back toward your house.

These measures allow your home to have the best chance against water events, especially those on a smaller scale.  Major storm and water events are a different story, and are much harder to guard against.  If your home or business suffers from any size water damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We have the expert knowledge and specialized tools to help you get back on your feet.

Act Fast To Save Your Hardwood Floors

12/9/2020 (Permalink)

Many houses in Fairfield County have hardwood flooring in some portion of their homes. If water damage occurs, the flooring will almost always be affected. If water is removed quickly, and it does not have the chance to soak the wood or subfloor, the flooring can be saved. If this happens to you, immediately shut off the water source to stem the flow. Additionally, you can mop up as much water as possible before SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport arrives.

The narrow spaces between the floorboards is where most of the potential damage can occur. This is where a majority of the water will be absorbed in the event of water leakage. When the floor absorbs the water, the boards will expand.  This can cause individual boards to crack, or the entirety of the floor can become misshapen. We avoid these issues by removing water before these effects can occur, provided we are alerted to the damage in a timely manner.

The next step is to extract any remaining moisture from the flooring using a drying system.  This consists of mats that are secured to the floor and connected to a suction system that pulls the water out prior to long-term damage occurring.  We also employ the use of industrial strength fans and dehumidifiers.

Thanksgiving 2020 Fire Safety

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

Many people and families will be focused on safety this Thanksgiving.  With people traveling to different places for gatherings, the four will be on eliminating the transmission of COVID-19.  But you still need to take care with cooking, as Thanksgiving Day cooking still remains a large cause of fires every year.

Kitchen fires are the leading cause for home fires every year.  Per the Red Cross, this holiday is the most dangerous.  With everything going on, people tend to leave ovens and stovetops unattended.  This leads to an increased risk for fires to start.

Use the following tips to limit your risk for fires this Thanksgiving:

Watch your food as it cooks

Don’t leave your hot cooktops or oven alone.  If you need to leave the kitchen for any period of time, tap one of your family members in to watch until you return.

Keep flammable items away from the heat

Keep your cooking area free of anything that has a risk of catching on fire.  This could be paper towels, grocery bags, or even your loose sleeves.

Know the signs of a pending fire

Turn the heat off if you see smoke starting, or if grease begins to boil. Take the food off the burner slowly and set away from the heat. You can keep a pan lid or cookie sheet on hand to smother any flames that start.  Don’t let anyone touch or move the item until it has completely cooled off.

Check your smoke alarms

This should be done year-round, but is especially important around the holiday season.

If you have any fire or smoke damage this Thanksgiving, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We understand how stressful this situation can be.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized tools to get you taken care of properly.

Practice Safety Before The Flood Damage Mitigation Process Begins In Your Trumbull Home

8/3/2020 (Permalink)

Summer weather can bring heavy rain storms that have the potential to cause extensive water damage. Flooding is one potential catastrophe that can negatively affect your home. This damage can be very evident, but some of the damage will likely be hidden or harder to detect.

After the storm ends, the visible water will recede, but that does not mean that there is potentially dangerous damage that has still occurred.  Practice safety as you navigate your home while the remediation process is underway.  Here are a couple things that are important to consider:

Electrical wires may be damaged

Storm water can damage wires and appliances in your home. Water and live wires have the potential to cause fire and electrocution. Switch off the power before reentering your home. Protect yourself and your home by having a professional examine the entire electrical system to verify that it is not damaged.  Have any repairs done immediately.

The structure of your home may be compromised

Storm water can cause warping, buckling, and weak spots in walls and floors around your home.  This is a major safety hazard that is often hard to detect by the naked eye.  This is especially true if this damage occurs to the frame or foundation of your home.  Have a home inspector come in and assess any damage of this type so that you are safe.

Hiring professionals will help to detect and remediate both visible and invisible types of damage caused by flood waters. When your Trumbull home has storm-related water damage, it is paramount to find a flood restoration company like SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport to help you.

"Restore" vs. "Replace" Mindset

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

At the point when your home has been harmed by fire or water damage, our objective at SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport is to make the remediation process as quick and least disruptive as possible.  We also want to provide cost savings to you when possible.

When assessing the damage to your property, we need to examine all of your belongings that have been affected.  Inevitably, a portion will have to be discarded and replaced. But our skilled technicians identify the items that can be salvaged.  This does two things for our customers. First, the sentimental value of your items will be preserved by saving them. Also, it will cost less, as the items will not need to be replaced.  Maintaining the “restore” over “replace” mindset sometimes gives our customers the option to remain in their home during remediation, as less disruptive methods are used.

We use this mentality at every single damage that we respond to, leaving customers happy, both with our methods, and at the fact that they still have many of their precious belongings.  If you suffer any type of damage in your home or business, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport at 203.324.1642. We have your best interest at heart.

SERVPRO Has Your Safety In Mind

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

When a water damage affects your home or business, there are obvious issues that need to be addressed.  These include soaked floors, damaged possessions, waterlogged walls, and discoloration. But there are other conditions that may occur that can present health risks when flooding occurs.  SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport addresses these issues so that you return to a safe environment when remediation is finished.

Often overlooked is the potential for health hazards that a water damage can bring. Depending on the origin of the water, it can bring unwanted bacteria and germs with it.  These conditions can contribute to the growth and transmission of many kinds of fungi and bacteria, some of which can cause illness. Inhabitants are at increased risk of exposure to airborne particles that can cause adverse respiratory issues. Also, mold may begin to grow in as little as 24 hours of the initial damage.

Other conditions that could present health risk are broken glass, spilled chemicals, and electrical shock due to water coming into contact with live power sources.  All of these are reasons why, in the event of flooding in your home or business, you should use extreme caution, and call a professional remediation company immediately.

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has your safety in mind, and is ready to respond at a moment's notice.  We will quickly and safely address the issue, and return your property to preloss condition.

Why You Should Call SERVPRO for Sewage Cleanup

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

Be sure you call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport for all residential or commercial sewage backups.

DIY Sewage Cleanup Is Not A Good Idea

In the digital age, you can find anything you're looking for online. A quick search will yield hundreds of websites that show how to clean sewage and dirty water from your building.  Every article has the same info and the same few steps. It consists of putting on gloves, removing the solid waste, using bleach on the area, and letting it dry out. You may be tempted to go this route, to save both time and money.  But if you try this, it could lead to you spending more time and money down the road if you don't call a professional company in.

Time And Money

If you clean up the mess on your own, it may appear that the issue is taken care of.  You can't see or smell anything, so you are satisfied. But the water component of the sewage may have actually soaked into your walls and flooring.  Over time, this can cause warping, discoloration, and foul odors to develop. If this happens, you will need to spend more time and money to fix the problem the right way.

Not to mention the high risk to your personal health if you are dealing with raw sewage.  Coming into contact with the contaminated matter will expose you to harmful bacteria. When it dries, the same harmful particles will become airborne, which can cause health issues.

If you have a sewage leak or backup, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport immediately.  We will respond quickly to extract the hazardous water and solids, as well as make sure that no harmful material remains afterwards.

Two Reasons To Let SERVPRO Help With Your Commercial Sewer Backup

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

When a business or commercial building has sewage back up into their working area, it presents a few issues.  These range from business interruption to unsafe working conditions. Getting the problem fixed quickly is important to resolving both of those issues. This leads some Bridgeport business owners to address the problem themselves, in the interest of time and money.  This is a bad idea for a few reasons:

Hard To See

We have encountered many people who try to clean sewage themselves, and then end up calling us down the road due to bad smells and discolored and warped walls and floors. Sewage, like regular water, will soak into any material it comes into contact with. This damage will not be evident right away, so it is often missed.  SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has the equipment and techniques to detect and extract all sewage in the beginning, so no problems arise in the future.

Cost

It may seem like tackling the issue yourself is a less costly option.  But it can cost far more if the job is not done properly the first time around.  If you do not adequately address the problem, mold can develop, which will need to be cleaned.  This will be an additional cost on top of the initial cleanup that many business owners do not consider.

Danger

Raw sewage carries an incredible amount of harmful bacteria.  If contact is made during cleanup, you can become ill. Additionally, if the sewage dries, that harmful bacteria can become airborne, causing further illness, even when there is no sign of damage remaining.

Response Time And The SERVPRO Difference

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

Water, fire, and mold damage can happen at any time, and may occur at the most inconvenient of times. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport provides emergency cleaning and restoration services every day, helping thousands of people every year.  Response time is critical in these situations because of how quickly adverse conditions can develop. It is astonishing how fast this can happen.

Minute One

  • The spread of water saturates surfaces
  • The water is absorbed into walls, floors, furniture, and personal items
  • Paint on walls starts to bubble, and furniture stains bleed, causing stains
  • Warping occurs in paper goods and other personal items.
  • Any bacteria that is in the water becomes airborne, and absorbed into materials

Day One

  • Disintegration begins in drywall
  • Tarnishing occurs on metallic materials
  • Warping occurs in floors and other wooden items
  • Strong odors begin to develop

Two Days

  • Mold growth starts to develop
  • Metal begins to rust
  • Paint begins to blister.
  • Severe biohazard risk becomes exponentially greater

Over One Week

  • The cost and length of the remediation process becomes much greater.  This is when extensive rebuilding of the structure becomes commonplace.
  • The structural integrity becomes severely compromised, and presents serious safety risks.

Faster To Any Size Disaster

Flooding and water damage can occur rapidly, and the different types of damages that it causes start to happen immediately. Rising water and moisture spreads to floors, walls, furniture, and appliances.  As soon as contact is made, damage begins to occur. SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport responds quickly and begins the water extraction procedure almost immediately. This minimizes the amount of immediate and secondary damage that may occur. We specialize in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a water damage event.

Pet Safety During Spring Storms

3/19/2020 (Permalink)

Our furry friends are such an important piece of our life. Their happiness and safety mean so much to us.  When frequent spring storms occur, both can be threatened. Use the following tips to keep your pets safe during these events:

  • If your pets are outside, thunder and lightning may cause them to scare and run. Make sure that all microchips and tags are current.
  • If you know that a storm is coming, keep pets indoors if possible
  • Dry pets off if they get wet to prevent chills and illness
  • If you have outdoor pets, ensure that enclosures and cages are insulated from wind and rain
  • Make sure that no trees are close to enclosures in the event that they fall down.
  • Keep in mind that older pets are more sensitive to cold temperatures and dampness
  • Make an emergency kit for your pets with items like extra food, toys, and a blanket
  • Bring your pets with you if you leave your home

If storm damage hits your Trumbull, Monroe, or Bridgeport home, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport. We are ready to respond quickly to help.

Structural Destruction

The second problem that needs to be addressed with sewage is the dampness remaining from the water, causing auxiliary harm after remediation. On the off chance that the walls and floors of the building are not dried appropriately, or actually replaced, mold growth and foul odors can occur.

Fire Risk

Often overlooked is the potential fire risk that a sewer backup presents.  If the water level rises to the height of any outlets, plugs, extension cords, or gas-burning equipment, do not attempt to touch or move anything and get out of the building as soon as possible. If the level is rising and still below any electrical equipment or outlets, turn off the power as soon as possible.

If you have sewage back up in your Bridgeport home or business, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We will safely and expertly remediate the damage to avoid all the immediate and secondary issues.

When A Storm Causes Water Damage

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

At the point when we get a call to help with flood damage, we can never be certain how serious it is until we show up to assess the circumstances. Various levels of rising waters influence the restoration techniques that we use. We search for the following indications of destruction to decide how broad the issue is. A predictable marker of most extreme flood damage is the existence of standing water. At the point when water stays in your home, and does not drain, it can start to cause costly and lasting harms to the structure. The water will almost immediately seep into flooring, but there are other forms of damage that may result if the issue is not addressed promptly.

Waterlogged Walls

We always anticipate that ground surface materials will be drenched because of flood damage, yet when the walls of your home have suffered critical harm, this might be an indication of extra issues that require an increasingly intensive examination to find and eliminate. Some of the time, when water pours in quickly and later subsides, it can leave dampness in the walls.  This can lead to mold growth and misshapen materials. SERVPRO professionals utilize the latest techniques and specialized equipment to remove the moisture.

Outside Destruction

Despite the fact that the outside of your home may be considerably more impervious to the impacts of flood damage than inside spaces, it can still take on water. This can lead to roof leaks, flooded basements, and weaknesses in siding. We can help with identifying these issues, as well as remediating the damage that has been caused by the flood waters.

Call us if any standing water is present in your home or business.  SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport can assist you with recouping from flood damage.

Appliance Cleaning After A Fire

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Many fires that happen in Norwalk homes start because of cooking mishaps. For instance, leaving things on the stove unattended is a significant reason for home fire damage in Fairfield County.

At the point when things you are cooking get excessively hot, they can create smoke damage and cause a fire to start. On the off chance that a stovetop fire spreads throughout your kitchen, the soot damage can cause a few significant issues.

During remediation, soot cleanup can be a critical piece of the procedure. When SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport shows up at your property, we start by first evaluating the issues stemming from the original fire. For fires that have caused smoke and soot damage, we clean the residue off of affected surfaces. On the off chance that the burst was enormous, we can offer rebuilding services.

During fires in the kitchen, one thing that gets influenced by either direct heat or soot damage are your appliances. Particularly since apparatuses like your fridge and microwave have smooth surfaces, smoke deposits can frequently adhere to these things first. Most appliances are developed out of hard non-permeable materials like metal and glass. For the most part, when cleaning these surfaces, we use water-based cleansers. In situations where sediment is thick and has clung well to the influenced surfaces, we can add a stronger industrial cleaner to the solution. In certain circumstances, the electrical segments could have additionally been influenced by deposits. When this happens, we remove the appliance from the power source and clean the entirety of every affected surface. This can be done with stoves and refrigerators, as well as smaller appliances like toasters, microwaves, and coffee makers.

In the event that you ever experience the effects of even light smoke and soot damage, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport. We have eco-friendly and safe solutions that eliminate unsightly and odorous deposits from your kitchen appliances. When coupled with our advanced techniques, we are able to restore your home or business to preloss condition.

Fire Hazard Alert: Hoarding

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

Excess clutter is a major fire hazard.

According to the Mayo Clinic, hoarding is defined as “a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs.” The staggering amount of items crowds the space and prevents regular use and navigation.  Hoarding may lead to a serious fire risk in the home.

How Hoarding Increases Fire Risks:

  • If there are combustible items in close proximity to the stove, fire potential skyrockets
  • Space heaters and baseboard heaters can ignite nearby materials.
  • If the hoarder is also a smoker, items such as papers and fabric are easily lit
  • Most importantly, exits may be hard to get to, or completely cut off by accumulated items

Why Hoarding Affects First Responders:

  • Firefighters cannot effectively fight the fire, or evacuate inhabitants or animals when hindered by clutter
  • First responders can become trapped, as well as hurt by piles of items that may topple over
  • When hoarded items become waterlogged by firefighting efforts, their weight is dramatically increased.  This can lead to structural collapse if enough items are present.

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport has experience with cleaning cluttered homes.  If you or someone you know needs this level of professional cleaning, give us a call today. We provide a judgment-free and thorough cleaning of any space.

3 Things You Need To Know About Commercial Water Damage

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

You've had water damage in your business.  So many thoughts are probably running through your mind.  What should I do? What's the first step? How long will this affect my business?

The one thought that you definitely will have will be around the cost, and whether or not your insurance will cover the damage.

1. What Type Of Damages Are Covered By Different Policies

Depending on the origin of the water in your business, you may or may not be covered under your policy.  Your business insurance policy should cover water damage that comes from a sump pump failure, a burst pipe or a sink overflow.  If the water comes from a flood causing water to flow into your building, you will not be covered. A separate flood insurance policy is what is needed to be covered under those circumstances.

2. Not Every Water Damage Is Covered

When your business suffers water damage, some of the damage will be covered, but not everything will be covered.  The initial damage will be taken care of by your policy. But any damage that happens as a result of water being left stagnant will not be covered.  For instance, if a sink overflows, yoru policy should cover the extraction of the water, drying the area out, and reconstruction of any walls that were affected.  If the water is not properly dried out, and mold begins to grow, your policy will not cover you to remove it.

3. SERVPRO Of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport Can Help

We have over 30 years of experience remediating all types of water damages in a commercial building.  Our skilled technicians utilize both the most effective techniques and specialized equipment to make sure that you are taken care of.  We will act fast to get your business back up and running as soon as possible.

Common Issues That Could Affect Your Commercial Building

3/5/2020 (Permalink)

Keeping your business or commercial property safe and sound is important to you.  Additionally, the outward appearance dictates how the public views your business. But small issues can turn into larger ones if not taken care of soon enough.

We have highlighted some of the issues that occur most frequently in commercial buildings. When you have some time, inspect your building for these issues. Should you find any of these, do your best to get them fixed in a timely manner.  Not addressing them soon enough could result in costly damage happening down the road.

Leaks - Whether you have a leak in your roof, foundation, or pipes, water can accumulate in areas of your building.  That can lead to rotting wood, foul odors, and mold growth.

Asbestos - Although not used much anymore, older buildings may still have asbestos present.  Get your building inspected.

Fire Safety Regulations - Make sure that your fire extinguishers are up to date and are in working order.  Check your sprinkler system to ensure that in the event of a fire, they will work as intended.

Electrical Faults - If you have older wiring in your building, you should have it checked for faults.  If you have ever had a rodent problem, you should also have your wiring checked. Mice and rats tend to chew on wires, leaving them exposed and more likely to start a fire.

At SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport, we offer many commercial services. Whether you have fire, water, or mold damage, we can be there quickly to begin the remediation process.

Know Your Flood Insurance Policy

3/5/2020 (Permalink)

Flood insurance is something that is very important to have if you live in an area that is susceptible to water-related storm damage. But this type of policy does not cover everything.

Look over your individual policy to find out exactly where you are and are not covered.  Learn what type of damage is not covered by most flood insurance policies below.

Internal Malfunctions

Some homeowners believe that all water damage is covered.  But this is not true. Flood damage only covers water damage that is a result of external sources like excess rainwater or a hurricane.  If a pipe bursts and causes a “flood” in your basement, this will not be covered.

Swimming Pools

Another common misconception is that because your pool is outside your home, it will be covered.  If a crack in the liner causes the water to drain into your home, this will also not be covered.

Secondary Damage

While you may be covered for water that is a result of a storm, any residual effects will be your responsibility.  For instance, your policy should cover extraction of excess rainwater. But if moisture remains, which leads to mold, your flood insurance will not cover this.

Living Expenses

A flood in your home may force you to relocate until the remediation process is completed. Living expenses, such as hotels and food during this time period will not be covered by your flood policy.

As mentioned above, look at your flood insurance policy to find the limitations so that you are not surprised in the event of flood damage.  If you do sustain storm-related flood damage, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.

Methods That SERVPRO Of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport Uses To Restore Fire Damage

3/5/2020 (Permalink)

Sometimes a fire completely destroys a home and everything inside it. But when it doesn't, steps can be taken to clean and restore items of personal property.  This allows restoration of items that may be of sentimental and financial value, which may reduce the emotional strain of dealing with a fire in your home.

Here are the methods that we may use, depending on the type of item, and level of damage sustained.

Dry Wiping

This method uses dry cloths and sponges for dry surfaces with average soot residue that forms as a powder. This method is usually the first step that our technicians take when cleaning items.

Wet Wiping

When the soot and smoke residue is heavier, we will use this technique.  We use the same sponges and cloths, but will also employ the use of water.  A cleaning solution may also be used with this method.

Foam Cleaning

This method uses a special bottle that forces extra air into the cleaning solution, turning it into a foam.  This is useful when a surface should not be saturated with water, such as upholstery or drapes.

Abrasive Cleaning

Some homeowners may have surfaces like marble, concrete, or metal that are covered with heavy soot. These surfaces can withstand a heavier method of cleaning, so we use a stronger cleaner paired with a tougher tool.  This may be steel wool or a rough sponge.

Commercial Fires And Why They Happen

3/5/2020 (Permalink)

Fires occur in a commercial setting all the time.  Take simple precautions to protect yourself before disaster strikes.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, fire departments respond to over 3,300 fires in businesses each year.  These fires caused over $112 million in property damage, including business interruption and lost revenue. If you own a business or own a commercial property, you should be aware of where the fire risks lie, and take preventative measures to reduce those risks.

Similar to our homes, a majority of fires in a commercial structure happen as a result of cooking.  Ensure that smoke detectors are functional, and that batteries are replaced on a regular basis.  Also make sure that there are working fire extinguishers available, and they are not expired. This is especially important in areas of your business that have a kitchen or other heat-producing appliances.

Improper knowledge and lack of knowledge is the other prevalent cause of fire damage in businesses.  To combat this, conduct routine fire safety meetings. Teach employees and staff proper fire safety, as well as informing them where fire extinguishers are located.

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport can help you plan for a disaster by completing an Emergency Readiness Profile. It will ensure that in the event of a fire, we are able to respond in the most efficient manner.  Contact us to get one of these free documents created for you and your business.

Is Your Commercial Building Wasting Water?

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

At home, it’s easy to cut down on your water usage.  You can take shorter showers or turn the faucet off while you brush your teeth.  In a business setting, this becomes harder. For one, there are many more people that have the potential to waste water. There are a few measures you can take to reduce water consumption at your business, which in turn, will save you money.

You have probably seen touch-free faucets that disperse water for a short period of time before turning off.  You can install these in your business. The upfront cost is not small, but should save you money in the long run. Manufacturers claim that automatic faucets can save up to 80% of water per faucet installed.

Additionally, using newer faucet aerators can save money too. The typical bathroom uses 2.2 gallons of water per minute.  Installing an aerator will keep the same water pressure, while reducing water output by .5 gallons per minute. At around $2 per unit, this is an extremely inexpensive way to save money in your business.

While the upfront cost may be high, you can also install water-efficient appliances in your business.  This includes items like dishwashers, toilets, and drinking fountains, where it applies.

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport promote the use of water-saving measures to business owners for their cost-saving potential.

Protect Yourself Against Dryer Fires

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

It’s a fact. Everyone needs to do laundry. But one of the most common household chores can be one that presents the danger of fire damage.  From drying potentially combustible materials to improper dryer ventilation, your dryer can start a fire in your home or business.

Clean Your Lint Trap Regularly

Every load of laundry that your dryer dries extract lint from the clothes, which becomes attached to the lint trap.  That lint is very combustible, especially if it is allowed to build up over time. Before every load, get in the habit of cleaning the lint trap out.

Clean Dryer Vents

Often overlooked, dust and debris in your dryer vent and hoses can lead to a fire igniting.  Once a year, take the preventative step of having your dryer vent system professionally cleaned.  If you have not replaced your exhaust hoses in a while, ensure that they are not made of vinyl. These hoses, which were used for a long time, are flammable, and should be replaced.

Use Caution When Drying Combustible Items

If you get gas, oil, or other flammable material on your clothing, use caution when drying these items.  Even after going through the wash, these substances can remain, and can quickly ignite under high heat. If you need to dry these items in the dryer, monitor the dryer to make sure you can address the issue as soon as it happens.

If you suffer fire damage due to a dryer fire, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We can provide immediate assistance in your home or business.

The Four Stages Of A Fire

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

When a fire breaks out, it actually occurs in four different stages, from incipient to decay.  This takes the fire from ignition to when it is extinguished. Each stage can cause different types of damage that SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport can remediate.

Incipient

This stage starts when heat, oxygen and a fuel source undergo a chemical reaction, which results in the ignition of a fire.  This is a small flame that does have the chance to go out by itself. Catching a fire in this stage gives people the best chance to either put out the fire, or get out of the building.

Growth

This stage is when a fire begins to build.  Factors that affect the rate of growth include the amount of oxygen in the environment, nearby combustible items, and ceiling height. This stage of the fire is the shortest in duration, but is the stage when a flashover can occur.  A flashover is when combustible items in the environment will ignite without warning.

Fully Developed

This is the hottest stage of the fire.  At this point, the fire has consumed most, if not all of the combustible materials in the environment.  This can include furniture, clothing, wood, and flammable liquids. For inhabitants on a home or business, this is the most dangerous stage, due to the high heat and the potential for smoke inhalation.

Decay

This stage begins when the fire has no more source of fuel, whether that be oxygen or flammable materials.  The decay stage is usually the longest, especially if no external efforts are made to extinguish the blaze. If the fire is not fully put out, an influx of oxygen can reignite the fire.

If you suffer fire damage in your home or business, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport immediately.  We are available 24/7 to respond with our skilled technicians and specialized equipment.

What To Do If Your Washing Machine Causes Water Damage

2/27/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can be caused by many things, but a leading reason comes from washing machines.  This is often caused by cracked, blocked, or otherwise compromised drainage hoses. Hoses wear out much faster than the machines that they are attached to, so even newer washers can cause this type of water damage.

If your washing machine causes water damage, locate the water shutoff associated with the machine.  This will at least prevent further water from flowing out. Once the water has stopped, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport for assistance.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment to properly remediate the damage.

A professional remediation company like SERVPRO can locate and extract water that is unreachable for most homeowners.  Additionally, we will take the necessary steps to ensure that secondary damage will not occur in the future. This includes mold growth, odor, and the breakdown of surrounding walls.

To prevent this kind of damage occurring in your home, inspect your hose now for cracks, wear, and to make sure it is still secured properly.  Additionally, replace your hose every few years. Because water can freeze in the drainage hose, check during especially cold weather as well.

Secondary Damages That Can Affect Your Business

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

When a flood or other water damage hits your business, you will probably see some visibible and instant damage, such as drywall and carpeting that is soaked or waterlogged. This type of issue is referred to as primary damage, as it is the first way that water affects the structure.  If primary damage is not addressed in a timely manner, or in the right way, it can quickly lead to secondary damage. These are issues that progress slower and may result in harder to notice problems. If your primary damage is not addressed by professionals, like the ones at SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport, it can lead to some of these problems.

Deteriorating Drywall

Once drywall has been soaked through, it needs to be thoroughly dried out.  If it is not, it will begin to break down. The material inside the drywall begins to disintegrate if not dried soon enough.  This can lead to a larger project down the road if not addressed properly from the start.

Mold Growth

Mold becomes an issue when moisture levels after a water damage in your business are not returned to acceptable levels.  Lingering moisture allows mold spores to grow, sometimes at a rapid rate. They can spread to other parts of your business, leading to foul odors and other unsatisfactory problems.

Warping Hardwood Floors

When hardwood floors become soaked after water damage, the moisture needs to be fully extracted from the floorboards.  If it is not done completely, the remaining moisture can cause the wood to shift and warp. This issue can be very costly, as hardwood is expensive, and the process to replace the wood is not cheap either.

Storm Preparation Can Save You Money

2/19/2020 (Permalink)

A storm can spell trouble for homes and businesses alike. From gale force winds to lightning strikes, a storm can cause a wide array of damage.  While every situation may not cause catastrophic damage to your home, even a small roof puncture from a tree limb or flying debris can be enough to allow substantial runoff and torrential rainfall to pour into your home. A falling tree can cause serious damage to your roof, siding and windows. Heavy rain can also cause concern for potential flooding. Below are a few tips to help keep your home safe and dry in the event of a storm:

  • Routinely check your home or business for flaws in the structure. This includes your siding and roof.  Even the smallest hole can allow rainwater in, which can lead to water damage and mold growth.
  • Trim larger branches that could potentially cause structural damage if a storm caused them to fall on your home or business.
  • Make sure that sump pumps are working properly.  Sump pump overflows during a storm are a leading cause of water damage.

When your home or business suffers damage as a result of a storm, SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport is ready to provide assistance.  We can be reached around the clock at (203) 452-7781.

Indoor Storm Safety Tips

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

When a thunderstorm hits, lightning comes with it.  High winds and hail can also cause structural damage and cause injury. Everyone has heard about outdoor safety tips during a storm to avoid being harmed. But a common misconception is that once inside, we are absolutely safe from the dangers of lightning and other storm hazards.  Follow these safety tips to stay safe even while in your home or business:

  • Remain indoors until the storm passes.
  • Maintain a safe distance from windows, skylights, and doors, as storm winds and hail can shatter glass and cause injury.
  • Electrical wires can conduct lightning.  Refrain from using landline telephones and other household appliances.
  • Do not use running water.  The metal pipes that the water travels through are highly conductive.

If your home or business suffers from any type of storm damage, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We are available 24/7 to respond to your needs.

Sump Pump Tips

12/16/2019 (Permalink)

We’ve had an unseasonably mild winter so far. As a result, many of the precipitation that has occurred has been rain, as opposed to snow. This increases the risk for excess water that has the potential to cause water damage.  Basement flooding can be extremely costly, both from a financial standpoint, as well as sentimentally, as stored items may be damaged.

The first step to avoid this type of water damage is to make sure that you have a sump pump, and that it is is good working order. One step that you can take is to connect your sump pump to generator backup.  This ensures that if you lose power due to weather, the pump will continue to combat water that comes into your home.

Another step that can be taken is to inquire if you are able to add sump pump failure coverage to your homeowner insurance policy.  This type of coverage can protect you in the event that your sump pump fails, or cannot keep up with the rate of water accumulation.

If you have a water damage due to sump pump failure, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.  We offer 24/7 service, and our team of trained professionals can be on scene quickly.

Commercial Document Drying

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

When we respond to a water damage, we’re known as the best in the business for drying out homes and businesses alike.  Most times, this entails the floor, walls, and ceiling.  But when the situation calls for, there are many additional services that SERVPRO of Stamford can offer.

One of these services is document drying.  When we work with places like hospitals, laws offices, accountants, or anyone that has a large number of paper files, we are usually able to salvage some or all of the clients records.  Other items that we work with include books, photographs, x-rays, and blueprints.

This are some waterlogged documents that became wet when a pipe burst in the ceiling of a commercial property.  We were able to salvage most of the affected documents, much to the client’s satisfaction.

Gas Station Restoration

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

A fire recently occurred at a local Fairfield County gas station.  The fire caused considerable smoke damage that had to be remediated. Ultimately, the store had to be closed until further notice, as stated by the local health department.  We know that for every minute that a business is not operating, money is being lost.  We worked with the health department and store owners to open up as soon as possible. The structure was cleaned with a chem sponge, while the contents were all wiped down. Lastly, the store was deodorized, and the odor of smoke was gone.

The next morning the health department came for inspection, and the store received a 97%, the highest score the store has ever gotten.

Thankful for our crew who responded immediately and got the job done!

Do You Need A Sump Pump?

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Some areas require homeowners to install sump pumps by law. If you’re not legally required to install a sump pump and if your basement is consistently warm and dry, you probably don’t need a sump pump. But if your basement occasionally floods or even if your basement feels damp, you may have a potential flooding risk.

You can check the moisture in your basement by taping a 2-foot-square piece of plastic on your basement floor away from heat and sunlight, and after a day or two, check the underside of the plastic. If there’s moisture on the underside of the plastic, groundwater is making its way into your basement, and you’ll want to look into installing a sump pump.

Preventing water damage is a whole lot easier than dealing with insurance, let alone losing time, energy, and money repairing the resulting damage. Find a professional who can install a sump pump in your basement and who can maintain the pump once installed. Then, you can rest easy knowing your sump pump will prevent uninsurable water damage.

If your Trumbull home or business suffers water damage as a result of not having a sump pump, or your sump pump malfunctioning, call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.

Different Types of Storm Damage

8/3/2019 (Permalink)

Extreme storms can be terrifying and perilous, and wellbeing must be your first need. In the event that your town has seen serious issues, be cautious. In the event that you think your home has been fundamentally damaged or if flood hazard remains, don't go inside until an expert says it's protected. Putting in a couple of evenings at a companion's home or in a crisis haven is a little cost to pay.

Snow Storm Damage

Winter storms assault a significant part of the U.S. and Canada consistently, and zones that don't get hit with snow regularly manage ice storms and solidifying precipitation. When you're managing snowstorms, lake impact storms and snow squalls, damage to your home can incorporate rooftop and auxiliary damage from overwhelming snow just as damage to sash, outside funnels, and siding. These frigid storms regularly accompany high winds, which can fuel damage by making shingles loosen up. These storms can unleash destruction on utility lines.

At the point when ice storms hit, you may should be significantly more wary. These storms are described by leaving at any rate a fourth of an inch of ice on surfaces. They can make rooftops breakdown, trees to break and electrical cables to snap. Attempt to remain in your home until the ice storm has passed and prepared with food, water, supplies, and power sources.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damage

Lightning storms can happen any place in the U.S., and they bring the danger of flames and extreme basic damage. Regardless of whether your lightning bars work appropriately by directing the vitality to the ground, it's conceivable to see damage to electrical wiring, machines, radio wires, satellite dishes, link or phone lines, and steel structure. Except if there are indications of flame, make certain to remain inside until the storm is over on the grounds that your home will secure you.

Thunderstorms accompany dangers regardless of whether you aren't hit by lightning. You could see flooding, hail, and high winds.

High Winds, Tornadoes and Hurricane Damage

High winds can happen for all intents and purposes anyplace, and thousands of tornadoes and hurricanes hit the U.S. consistently. Extreme winds are characterized as surpassing 50-60 mph. Damage from wind can be across the board and can influence your structure as well as encompassing landscaping and black-top. Know about the potential for falling trees and posts and damaged electrical cables, and deal with these issues immediately. After the storm, look at your property for basic damage to the home, including windows, siding, and rooftops. In the most extraordinary situations, rooftops can be passed clean over.

If you have any storm damage to your home or business, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe & Northern Bridgeport.

Getting your home or business dry is crucial in the aftermath of water damage. With excess moisture, mold and mildew can develop and bacteria can multiply. That’s why SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe and Northern Bridgeport uses moisture meters during and after completion of water remediation work to ensure that structures are properly dried.

Moisture meters can reach areas that may otherwise be overlooked or not considered as being affected by moisture. These include areas such as basement walls, spaces between layers of drywall, concrete subfloors, and beneath carpet and tile. Identifying potential damage to these lesser-suspected areas can save thousands of dollars in repairs later.

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe and Northern Bridgeport provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your emergency and have the expertise to handle your restoration or cleaning needs.

Hole In The Roof

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can dramatically affect your home.  One thing that people don’t realize is that in order to properly extinguish a fire, the fire department often has to damage the home in the process.  Two measures that cause damage to the home are sometimes taken.  First, a lot of water is often used to extinguish a fire, which causes water damage to the home.  The second measure is cutting a hole in the ceiling and roof so that heat and smoke can escape,  They do this so that cool air can flow into the house, allowing for easier and safer entry to put out the flames.  This picture shows one such hole.  As part of our rebuild process, we will fix this hole that was made by the firefighters.

Mold Under The Carpet

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

When a homeowner smelled a musty odor in their bedroom, they had the room tested for mold.  There was mold found beneath the carpet and subfloor that likely occurred from moisture that was never completely dried. The customer called us to remediate the mold, so we removed the carpet to fix the issue.  Once the carpet was pulled back, we removed the visible mold.  Next, our crew applied our environmentally-safe mold protection so that the issue would not return. If you suspect or know you have mold, please do not hesitate to call us.

Mold At A Historical Landmark

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

When we were called to this historical building, we knew that we had to handle this job with extra care.  Because of the nature of the building, we needed to eradicate the mold while not damaging the delicate wood. This picture shows mold present on the interior shudders.  These shudders along with the rest of the affected area was original dating back to the 1890s.  Our expert crew handled the challenge well, removing all visible mold and sealing the wood to prevent subsequent issues.  If you suspect or know you have mold, please do not hesitate to call us.

Flash Fire Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association a “flash fire” is defined as a type of short-duration fire that spreads rapidly through a fuel, such as dust, gas, or the vapors of an ignitible liquid, without the production of damaging pressure. This is what it looks like when a flash fire occurs as a result of improper use of propane tanks.  One unit in this multi-family building exploded due to rapid flame movement throughout.  Once the fire department had left, our crew got to work restoring the property.  Please use extreme caution when using and storing flammable substances.  If you suffer a fire or smoke damage at your home or business, please do not hesitate to call us.

Ice Storms Can Lead To Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Ice storms can cause significant damage, if not directly, then indirectly.  This pictures shows how heavy ice ice, and the effect it can have on trees that it covers.  If you have trees around your house that have branches overhead, this could be a potentially damaging situation.  If ice forms around tree limbs, they can snap off and damage your home. This could lead to secondary issues like water damage or frozen pipes. While it is warm out, trim overhanging branches that could be large enough to cause damage to your rood or siding. If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Dirt From Water Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, sometimes it is not as easy as removing the water and drying everything out.  This low-income housing complex had a burst pipe on their second floor.  The water leaked down to the first floor, and carried with it a whole lot of dirt and debris.  The photo demonstrates just how much dirt the water stream actually brought with it. Our crew removed the water, dried everything out, and then washed the floors so that the customer was happy.  If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Showroom Flooding

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

This was one of our trickiest jobs that we have taken on in recent history.  A pipe burst in a local art gallery and interior design showroom.  Due to the high value of many of the items in the business, we had to act extremely quickly to save them.  We were on scene within 30 minutes to begin extracting the water, and removing the valuable items. We set up our drying equipment to eradicate the remaining moisture and had them back in business in the shortest period of time.  If you have water in your business from a burst pipe, please call us.

Huge Water Extraction

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This person called us with over a foot of water in their large finished basement.  We were on scene within minutes with our large water pump to extract the water.  Usually, we only need one hose to pull all the water out of any given structure.  There was so much water here that we had to use two hoses. Luis can be seen here making sure the water is flowing out properly to minimize the amount of time it took to remove all the water.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Ceiling Removal Due To Storm Damage

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This picture showcases the effects of not having a leak-proof roof.  This person had postponed re-shingling their roof.  But unfortunately, they experienced the effects of that decision.  Water leaked in over the family room and started to soak the furniture.  We were called to fix the situation, which required removing a portion of the ceiling to allow for proper drying.  Make sure that your roof is up-to-date, and you address any issues as soon as they arise. If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Liquor Store Flooding

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a local liquor store was going about their business when a piece of their ceiling tile fell onto the floor.  Over the next few hours, most of the ceiling had collapsed into the store.  Rain was causing the waterlogged material to become heavy and fall down.  This soaked a lot of the merchandise and business had to be halted for a long time.  We came in, removed the water and also carried out all the debris. If you have water in your business from a storm, please call us.

Acting Quickly May Save Your Belongings

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

When a basement floods, everything that is sitting on the floor gets wet.  Some things may be okay, but most of your belongings will become damaged, the extent of which only gets worse the longer they stay submerged.  Many times, if the water is pumped out and extracted quickly, some items can be saved, at least to some extent.  We specialize in large-scale water extraction, and can pump thousands of gallons of water in a timely manner.  This is a photo of a recent homeowner’s basement who called us.  With our equipment, we got the water out, and began the drying process.

Fire In The Garage

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a fire broke out in a home and adjoining garage structure.  Fortunately, none of the inhabitants, one of which was a small dog, were hurt during the ordeal.  The fire consumed most of the interior, and spread rapidly into the garage, pictured here.  You can see just how hot the fire was, based on the damage to the car that was parked away from the house.  We responded quickly by boarding up the structure, and are now in the process of cleaning and deodorizing the interior. Once that step is done, the rebuild can proceed.

Mold Containment

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Mold outbreaks are something to absolutely take seriously.  If mold spores become airborne, they can be inhaled.  This may lead to unwanted and harmful respiratory issues.  But when a mold damage occurs, it usually happens in one part of the home or business.  How do we manage this issue while safely and quickly removing mold? When dealing with mold, we build containment areas to be sure no spores are spread.  We use disposable plastic to keep the harmful particles out of unaffected areas.  This also allows for a minimal disturbance to the daily routine so that business and life can continue.

Leaky Roof No Match For Rainstorm

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

During a recent rainstorm, the roof leaked overnight at a local educational facility.  Unfortunately, the damage was not noticed until the following morning.  We were called in to fix the situation, which included extracting the water and dehumidifying the space once the bulk of the water was removed.  This photo does not show water that we pumped out.  It actually shows how much water we pulled out of the air with a dehumidifier.  All that moisture would have probably led to mold down the road if left untreated.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Eliminating Secondary Fire Damage

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs, it is not only the building that has the fire that is affected. Often, the surrounding structures suffer secondary damage like a layer of soot and smoke odors. If not properly cleaned in a timely fashion, the issue can lead to more permanent damage that unfortunately cannot be reversed. Here we see Odir cleaning the floors of an affected apartment to remove a thin layer of soot that will also remove the resulting odors. Because we responded within hours of the fire being extinguished, this will ensure that no long-term damage will occur.

Crawl Space Cleaning

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

This customer called us with mouse droppings and other debris in the crawl space under their business. This was causing foul odors to permeate up into the actual retail area.  Because business was conducted in the space, a loss of business was at stake.  We knew that we needed to take care of the issue quickly to minimize the effects on the tenants business.  We came in and cleaned both visible and invisible contaminants, and left the space fresh. We can see Roberto here, proud of the good job he did.

Small Pipe, Big Problems

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

It is astonishing just how much damage a little water can do. Take a look at the damage in this bedroom. The entire ceiling had to be removed and some of the walls were affected as well. You can see the size of the pipe that caused the damage.  If a pipe this size can produce that much water, imagine if the pipe had been one of the larger ones in the home.

We had to remove the ceiling and portions of the wall to begin the drying process.  Once that is done, we can bring in our fans and dehumidifiers.

Mild Winters Cause Mold

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

We’ve had a pretty mild winter, which means that any water that remains from melting ice or snow will stick around. This leads to mold, which can be harmful to humans and also pets if ingested. This issue will only grow as the weather begins to warm up for the spring season.  We can safely and effectively clean mold from surfaces like the exposed wood seen here. We are spraying disinfectant to ensure that after cleaning, mold will not return.

One piece of equipment that we also use is a High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier.  They work by filtering air through a fine mesh, removing harmful particles like mold, dust mites, and pollen that can cause adverse health affects.

Winter Cleaning Tips

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

When the temperature drops, we tend to spend more time indoors. Because this occurs, why not take the extra step to make sure you have a home you enjoy spending time in.

Here are a few small cleaning projects that you can undertake during the winter months to ensure that your home is both safe and cozy for the winter months.

Empty dryer vents - Pull the dryer out from the wall and disconnect the hose from the back of the appliance.  Use a vacuum to suck any loose lint from the exhaust hose.  Not only is this a step to take for safety measures, this will lead to a more efficient dryer performance. This can lower electricity bills a small amount.

Steam carpets and couches - Sometimes vacuuming doesn't get the whole job done. Even if your carpets look clean, carpets should be deep cleaned by a professional to eliminate any harmful and gross materials that a vacuum might miss.

Attic Fire

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

This is a recent fire that started in a residential attic.  The fire started when some flammable material was left in front of a skylight, which ignited under extreme heat.  The fire started in the attic, and spread down to one side of the house.  SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport was called in to remediate the damage.  We will be providing a few different services in this case.  First, we will be packing up contents and belongings to store while other work is being done.  We will also be cleaning the soot off the walls, as well as deodorizing the area from the smoke smell.  Then, reconstruction can begin on the actual frame of the house.

To avoid a similar disaster, remember to keep all flammable objects out of direct sunlight where they may get too hot.

Fire Education Class

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

One of the best ways to learn how to avoid a disaster occurring in your home is to be educated about the issues that can be prevented.  Getting that knowledge at an early age is even more valuable, so it becomes normal at a young age.

That is why SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport sponsored a local class for young kids to learn about disaster prevention and management.  The children learned about fire safety in the summer class.  They learned how to make an evacuation plan for the family in the event of a fire, or any other situation where they would need to leave the house.  In the photo, the class is learning about the fire trucks and how they work to put out fires.  Each child even got to spray the hose!

Wind Damage Restoration

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricane damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof, to harsh winds and rains shearing away asphalt tiles. Roof repair of obvious defects usually ensues in the wake of hurricane damage and storm remediation. Correcting roof damage may challenge homeowners after a disaster, since a roof leak may not appear obvious.

Wind damage may loosen shingles, which can cause another roof leak in the future. Even a subtle roof leak of this nature can produce mold inside the home. Obtaining fast roof repair may prevent long term interior damage. A wind damage home restoration expert may assist clients in receiving comprehensive roof assessments and roof repair services when hurricane damage afflicts an area. Their expertise helps property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Storm Shutters

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes it's hard to tell what preventative measures are necessary to protect your home from a natural disaster. However, high winds and hurricane damage in the past few years have cost Americans several billions, and unprotected windows can result in expensive damages like broken windows and eventual mold.

• Accordion: Simple and straightforward to use, these manually folding shutters are available in strong materials like metal or polycarbonate.  These are the ones in the photo.

• Bahama: This stylish variety not only provides protection from heavy rain and high winds, but also from the sun.

• Colonial: Protect your dream home with traditional blinds that frame your windows and add value to your property.

• Rolling: Prepare for a storm with ease with shutters that unroll or hide away at the press of a button.

All of these different options are permanent home fixtures that come in a range of materials, colors and designs. They’ll protect your home from flying objects, heavy rains and strong winds, so you won’t have to worry about damage to your windows or your home interior.

Home Depot has some options if this is something that you would like to look into.

Water Damage Response Time

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

When a water issue strikes your home or business, response time is the most important factor when containing the damage.  SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport is extremely fast, but steps that you can take on your own before our professionals arrive can make a huge difference.

Within Minutes:

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack.
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
  • A musty odor appears.

Flood At A Car Dealership

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Last month, the combination of a burst pipe and excess rainwater caused a local car dealership to flood.

SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport was called in to remediate the damage.  What was unique about this instance is that the water affected both carpeted and laminate flooring.  This presented a challenge because we needed to use multiple types of drying and dehumidifying tactics to successfully fix the issue.  We also had to do the job while not disturbing or damaging the automobile inventory.

As you can see in the photo, we were able to completely dry out the affected area.  The carpet in the office areas were left dry and odor free.

Treat Mold Quickly

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

This is a job that we recently dealt with.  The customer had a water damage that was treated by another company.  The water was not completely dried out.  This led to mold growing in the ceiling when the leftover moisture warmed and provided an ideal habitat for the mold to spread.  Unfortunately, because the issue was not properly mitigated by the initial company, SERVPRO needed to demolish part of the ceiling and walls to effectively treat the situation.  Now the mold is gone, new ceiling and drywall has been installed, and the customer is back in their home.

If you have a water damage at your home, or you suspect that you have mold growing, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport at (203) 324-1642.  Time is of the essence, and they will make it "Like it never even happened."

Hurricane Preparedness Week

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem. Their impacts can be felt hundreds of miles inland, and significant impacts can occur without it being a major hurricane. Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 6-12, 2018) is your time to prepare for a potential land-falling tropical storm or hurricane.

During Hurricane Preparedness Week, make sure you have a hurricane evacuation plan. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

If a hurricane strikes, you’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy recovery period that could follow. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of one week. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights.

This Hurricane Preparedness Week, call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance checkup to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat. Remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.

The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure. Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan. Know where you will ride out the storm and get your supplies now. You don’t want to be standing in long lines when a Hurricane Watch is issued. Those supplies that you need will probably be sold out by the time you reach the front of the line. Being prepared, before a hurricane threatens, makes you resilient to the hurricane impacts of wind and water. It will mean the difference between your being a hurricane victim and a hurricane survivor.

Document Recovery with SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe, & Northern Bridgeport

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe, & Northern Bridgeport, we have the ability to save or recover your most important documents after a loss.  Whether it be a fire loss, water loss or flooding, or smoke damage, we have the capabilities to clean and dry those documents to have your commercial or residential property back to its original state as soon as possible.

We will begin by taking inventory of your documents at your home or office before we package them to transport for drying.

Once the documents arrive at our facility, they will go through a decontamination process to remove any bacteria left behind, depending on what type of loss has occurred.

We will then go through each box, page by page, to wipe down and remove dirt, soot, or other contaminants.  We have 3 levels of cleaning based on the type of soiling, and how heavy it is.

Many times documents that have been affected will hold residual smells of contaminants, or mildew, and should be deodorized before being returned to your client.

With the new age of technology, digitizing records and documents has become a standard practice in most industries. This eliminates the need to have massive file storage rooms and allows us to access records at the click of a button. If your file room was damaged by water, or smoke, and needed to be cleaned, dried, or decontaminated, digitizing might be a good choice to eliminate the need to have 100’s or even 1000’s of documents and records in storage.

During the aftermath of your loss,  often times facilities will find that they have documents they no longer need and would simply like to have them disposed of properly.  SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe, & Northern Bridgeport is able to help with this process as well.

Water Leak in a Commercial Building

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Recently, we were called to remediate a large-scale water damage in a multi-use commercial building.  Multiple businesses were affected when a sink malfunctioned, and water pooled on the second floor, seeped into the drywall, and flowed down to the first floor.

Our crew responded quickly, using cutting-edge equipment to extract thousands of gallons of water.  Once the excess water was removed, we observed that the carpets and the lower drywall was the most in need of drying.  Our skilled crew set fans to dry the affected area in a timely and efficient manner.  The photo shows our fans in action as they evaporate the moisture in one of the affected carpeted areas.

The customers involved were taken care of, and were all happy with the outcome after our crews finished the job.

SERVPRO of Trumbull, Monroe, & Northern Bridgeport is always ready to help those in need, so if you suffer a damage like this, please do not hesitate to call.

Mold In Your Washing Machine

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

We are soon entering warmer weather, which puts us at higher risk for mold and mold-related issues.  One place that we often overlook for mold is in our washing machine.  Whether top-load or front-load, new or used, every washing machine provides an ideal habitat for mold. The high moisture content in both the machine and the resulting atmosphere, the typical poorly-ventilated laundry room with its stale warm air, and the continual supply of decomposing organic material provided by soiled laundry all contribute to an environment conducive to mold growth and its accompanying mildew smell.

Here is how to ensure your washer and the surrounding area stays free of harmful mold:

You will need the following materials:

• White vinegar

• A natural all-purpose mold killing solution

• A cleaning rag (or sponge)

Begin with the exterior of the machine.  Use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution to wipe down the exterior of the machine. This will remove the more visible grime, such as dust and oily fingerprints. (Both organic sources provide floating mold spores with a tantalizing invitation to congregate and colonize.)

Next, clean around the lid and seal. For front-load washers, the rubber door seal will need extra care in order to ensure the removal of mold and mildew. Gently pull back on the rubber stripping and use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution. Even if no mildew or scum is visible, Step 2 is necessary in the prevention of mold growth.

——

Pour two cups of vinegar or lemon juice into the washer. Run the machine for a complete cycle on the longest, hottest setting. This will remove the mold odor and mildew smell, as well as stains and the build-up of detergents.

Once you have completed your cleaning process, discard the rags or sponges that you used, as they may contain harmful mold particles.

The majority of owners neglect to do regular maintenance on their washing machines. In addition, some owners only compound matters by leaving laundry in the machine hours, sometimes even a day or more, after a wash has completed.  What is often overlooked is the fact that mold grows quickly and can thrive off of laundry detergent due to its plant-based (and even animal fat or synthetic) components.  So use good timing when doing your laundry, and move your clothes to the dryer promptly.

We are an IICRC Certified Firm

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies.

IICRC Certified Firms must

• Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.

• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.

• Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.

• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.

• Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops the Standards for The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Prevent Legionnaire’s Disease in Commercial Settings

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

From the CDC:

Water System Maintenance

The key to preventing Legionnaires’ disease is to   prevent Legionella colonization (growth) in water systems.  Guidelines for reducing the risk of Legionella growth and spread are available for those who maintain and manage building water systems, including systems for potable (water for drinking and showering), non-potable, and recreational water from ASHRAE®. ASHRAE is a not-for-profit organization that develops standards and guidelines for industries that design, manufacture, and maintain building systems.

ASHRAE Guideline 12-2000: Minimizing the risk of legionellosis associated with building water systems

CDC developed a toolkit to help building owners and managers better understand ASHRAE Standard 188 and how to develop a water management program to reduce the risk of Legionella growing and spreading in their building(s). Dangers of Asbestos in a Business

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Although asbestos is for the most part no longer used in construction and manufacturing, many buildings today still retain traces or even large quantities of asbestos. Particularly in older buildings, testing for and identifying this asbestos is an important job, but one that is unfortunately neglected by many business owners. Failing to test for asbestos when making renovations or restorations to a building can cause long-term negative health effects for restoration professionals, customers, and even yourself, creating a legal and financial disaster large enough to ruin most businesses. There are specific Federal regulations mandated by the EPA regarding renovating buildings, and asbestos abatement. SERVPRO provides certified asbestos testing to ensure the safety of our technicians and your customers alike.

Asbestos testing for a business is not only advisable for practical reasons, but also for legal ones. Failing to test for asbestos can lead to steep fines and regulatory penalties, regardless of whether or not the substance is present. OSHA has explicit guidelines in place regarding demolition or renovations of commercial structures, especially schools, and other municipal buildings. Furthermore, if a customer or employee gets sick as a result of untested asbestos, you may be at risk of a costly and difficult lawsuit. Federal and state authorities alike take this process seriously, which is why it is always recommended to hire a certified company like SERVPRO to complete the task.

Health Reasons
In addition to laws on the subject, testing for asbestos should be a major consideration for your health. Asbestos can cause many negative health effects, some of which can shorten your lifespan or lead to long-term illness. Asbestos is a known carcinogen. The longer you are exposed to it, the more likely many of these side effects are to manifest, meaning that valued employees and regular customers may also be at risk. Just as the removal of mold growth can help to avoid a medical emergency in your business, so too can asbestos testing prevent a host of serious medical issues.

Storm Safety Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Lightning from thunderstorms injures hundreds of people in the U.S. every year and kills dozens. These causalities are easily preventable if you follow these simple safety tips.

1) Listen to the radio and television for severe thunderstorm warnings. The National Weather Service issues warnings for counties and even sends out text messages now to our mobile phones when storms are on their way. Pay attention and heed their warnings for safety.

2) Remember the 30 second rule. If there is not 30 seconds in between the time you see lightning and hear thunder, it’s time to go indoors.

3) Lightning typically strikes the tallest object around so if there is a storm, move indoors if at all possible or into a hard top car if there are no buildings around.

4) Once inside, stay away from windows, plumbing and electrical. If lightning strikes outside, it can carry inside via land lines.

5) Get out of boats and away from bodies of water. If you can hear thunder than you are close enough to get struck by lightning.

6) If you are caught outside, avoid standing by tall isolated objects such as trees. Find a grouping of small trees surrounded by taller ones, avoid bodies of water, and if there is only open spaces, look for a dry low-lying area and try to make yourself the smallest target possible. Do not lay flat on the ground, rather crouch with your head between your knees. Sheds, outhouses and tents provide no safety so keep this in mind when you are hiking or camping. Always think ahead and be prepared in the event that you are caught in a thunderstorm and if possible, turn around on your trip and head home.

Power Outage Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

When a heavy storm hits your area, your power may go out.  Most of us have experienced it before.  It can range from a minor inconvenience that lasts less than an hour, to a multi-day event that requires safety precautions be taken.

If your refrigerator loses power, food and other perishables are safe to consume if the outage lasts 4 hours or less.  After this period, bacteria can grow and cause food to be unsafe to eat. Medications that need to be refrigerated can lose their potency if warmed too much.  Most medications are still effective up to 24 hours after a power loss.  Still check each label to verify. After that period, discard all medications unless otherwise noted.

If an outage occurs in either the winter or summer, extreme temperatures can come into play.  Both heat stroke and hypothermia can affect people if the building without power has no means of temperature regulation.  If too hot, seek out a commercial space that has a generator powering an air conditioning system.

Fire Extinguisher Importance For Your Home or Business

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Office buildings need specific fire safety equipment to keep both employees and clients safe. This includes smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire alarms, and extinguishers.

The first step in fire damage restoration is to put out the fire using the proper tools.  A first responder may use an approved portable fire extinguisher to prevent a small fire from growing and causing further damage.

The National Fire Protection Agency publishes a series of standards and requirements for portable fire extinguishers called NFPA 10, available here.

No matter what the size of the fire, your first priority should be to get everyone out safely and call 911.  Once the fire has been put out, you can call SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport at (203) 324-1642 to assist.

Fire Investigation Assistance

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

After a large fire loss many questions need to be answered such as:

• What was the source of the fire?

• Were there any fire accelerants present?

• Was there negligence or arson activity?

• Was it a mechanical/structural issue or human error?

Local fire departments, private insurance companies, gas and power company representatives and many others are called upon to investigate the scene of the fire and do their best to answer these and many other questions. This process can take from a few days to several weeks.

SERVPRO will set up a containment fence around the perimeter of the property and install any needed wind and/or erosion control barriers. We will bring on site portable restrooms and any heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes and skid steers that are requested by the investigation team.  We provide the investigators with a mobile office, generators for power, lights and computers, hard hats, gloves, respirators, eye protection, water, coffee and miscellaneous office supplies.

Providing the fire investigation team with all the resources necessary to accurately and quickly determine the cause of the fire, helps streamline the entire insurance claims process, ensuring the reconstruction is started sooner for the property owners, so they can get back to living “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport is here to help with all fire damage and remediation issues.

Avoiding a Dryer Fire

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The fear of a dryer fire is one that is not commonly heard of, however, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries due to clothes dryer fires. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer venting.

Here are some small steps to take to Avoid a Dryer Fire:

1. Dryer's produce large amounts of lint. Be sure to clean the lint trap after EVERY use of the dryer.

2. Dryer Vents should ONLY be made of metal and be short and straight. Bends and curves result in lint buildup increasing the risk of a fire.

3. Do not run the dryer when you are away from home or sleeping.

What is Ice Damming?

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

An ice dam is an ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs of heated buildings that results from melting snow under a snow pack reaching the eave and freezing there. Freezing at the eave impedes the drainage of meltwater, which adds to the ice dam and causes backup of the meltwater in a manner, which may cause water leakage into the roof and consequent damage to the building and its contents if the water leaks through the roof.

Ice dams are a common sight in the Northeast. We've handled several claims this past month stemming from ice damming. What we've found is the flatter the pitch of the roof, the easier it is for an ice dam to get a grip. Gutters at the eaves can also trap snow and ice. If snow and ice build up high enough in the gutter, it can provide a foundation for an ice dam.

Stay tuned for our next blog, where we’ll tell you how to prevent these dangerous ice dams.

Ice Dam Prevention

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

PREVENTING ICE DAMS

You can scrape snow from the roof whenever it falls, using a snow rake from below or a broom or plastic shovel from above. BE CAREFUL: The first method can bury you in snow, while the second can send you slipping off the roof. Hire someone who knows how to use a safety line.

You can replace your shingle roof with standing seam or other metal roof. Or you can replace the bottom three feet or so of your shingle roof with a wide metal drip edge. Whatever you do, install a water-repellent membrane under any new roofing.

NOTE: If your roof is not very steep, an ice dam can still form on metal roofing and drip edges.

DEALING WITH EXISTING ICE DAMS

1. Remove the ice dam by breaking it free in small chucks. Do NOT use an ax or other sharp tool! You’ll cut through the shingles. Instead, tap lightly with a blunt mallet. This is slow, dangerous work, so hire someone experienced at roofing. Even if you do it safely, the chunks of ice can take pieces of shingle with them.

2. Clear out gutters and downspouts. Again, this is ladder work and an easy way to damage either plastic or metal gutters and spouts.

3. Melt troughs through the ice dam with calcium chloride ice melter. Do NOT use rock salt! It will damage paint, metals, and plants beneath the eave and wherever the salty water drains.

A good trough-maker is a tube of cloth (a leg from an old pair of panty hose works well). Fill it with calcium chloride, tie off the top, and lay it vertically across the ice dam. It will slowly melt its way down through the dam, clearing a path for the underlying water to flow free.

WHAT DAMAGE DO ICE DAMS CAUSE?

When an ice dam gets big enough, melted water backs up behind it and seeps underneath the shingles. Eventually, it will drip into the insulation and down into the ceilings and exterior walls beneath the eave, ruining sheetrock and paint. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing stays wet, it can form mildew and start to rot.

That's where we come into play. We can't prevent the ice damming from happening, but we can help you take care of the damages that it can cause.

Frozen Pipe Water Damage In Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Temperatures have fluctuated between cold and bone-chillingly cold.  When it gets very cold, homes and businesses are at higher risk of pipes freezing and ultimately bursting.

Here are a few tips to remember:

• Check around your home or business for areas where water supply lines are in unheated areas. Wrap exposed pipes with foam, insulated materials or pipe heating cables. Watch these locations on a daily basis when temperatures is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

• If you are going out of town, and you suspect that temperatures will drop, turn off the water to your home and open all the taps to drain the water system. Set your temperature no lower than 55° F.

• Unhook the water hoses from the exterior of the home and bring them inside, to maintain their life.

• Drip your faucets, to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes during an arctic blast weather advisory.

• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much costlier repair job if pipes freeze and burst

• Open cabinet doors when temperatures are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The warm air can circulate around the pipes and prevent the water from freezing.

Popular Locations of Frozen Pipes:

• Outside wall

• Under a sink

• Unheated crawlspace or basement

• Outside water spigot

• Swimming pool supply lines

• Water sprinkler lines

• Attics

• Garages

Tips on Thawing Frozen Pipes:

• If a pipe bursts before it is thawed, immediately shut off the water at the water main to prevent further damage!

• Frozen but not ruptured? If you turn on the faucet and the water doesn’t come out or comes out in a trickle, your pipes are probably frozen. You need to act quickly to thaw the frozen pipe before it bursts.

• Identify the frozen water supply pipe.

• Open a faucet supplied by the frozen line, even if you have not found the frozen spot.

• To find the blockage, follow the pipe back from the faucet to where it runs through cold areas such as an exterior wall, unheated crawl space or in some cases an unheated basement if the pipe is near an outside wall.

• Often the frozen area of the pipe will be frosted or have ice on it. If the situation is getting critical the pipe may be slightly bulged or look slightly fissured.

Frozen Pipe Behind a Wall:

• Leave the main water valve near your water meter open when thawing the pipe.

• If the frozen pipe is behind a wall or ceiling, you’ve got a challenge on your hands. You have three choices:

• Turn up the heat in the house and wait.

• Use an infrared lamp or lamps to heat the wall where you think the frozen area is located. Infrared lamps are better than regular heat lamps because the heat passes through the air without heating it, directing more energy to warming the wall and frozen pipe.

• Tear out part of the wall or ceiling to get at the frozen section of pipe. Then thaw the pipe as an exposed pipe.

If Your Pipes Burst…

• Turn off the water supply. Locate your water shut off valve and turn off the main water shut-off valve. You should find this in the basement or where the service pipe enters your home. Drain the system by turning on all your cold-water valves.

What You Can Do to Manage the Damage (until we get there):

• Water Buckets. If you notice the leak quickly you can catch dripping water in buckets.

• Make a hole in the ceiling to let water out.

• Turn off electronics/appliances

• Open Drawers, closets and cabinet doors to in enhance drying.

Be Smart About Garage Storage

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

With spring coming in the coming months, most of us try to accomplish new goals, get a new fresh start. Getting healthy, organizing our homes, bettering our lives' always seem to be at the top of the list. One space to start cleaning and organizing is the garage! That extra storage area that easily becomes a catchall for excess items.  We have compiled a list of items that should not be stored in your garage. Get them out and reclaim your space.

Paint - Because the garage is prone to extreme temperature changes, paint should not be stored in the garage.  Recycle paint or donate it.

Electronics- If you are putting electronics out in the garage, you must not be using them.  Donate these items because they can’t withstand the temperature fluctuations and will easily break.

Propane and Hazardous Chemicals- Proper ventilation is key for storage of propane and hazardous chemicals.  For safety reasons, these items need to be stored outside.

Food- Keeping food in the garage is an open invitation to rodents and insects.  Although shopping in bulk can save money, storing extra food in the garage will cause problems. The moisture and humidity will spoil the food. Find room in the house for food storage.

Cardboard boxes- Insects, mice and other rodents love cardboard.  Invest in waterproof plastic bins to store your items.

Mold After A Disaster

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Picture this: Your home or business is affected by a storm, whether the roof suffered a structural issue, or you had flooding from excess water coming in.  You fix the hole in the roof and dry the water yourself, and life continues as normal.  A couple months down the road, you find mold where the storm had previously had damaged your building.

Make sure this doesn’t happen.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has some great info about how to prevent mold after a storm hits your home or business.

After natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, excess moisture and standing water contribute to the growth of mold in homes and other buildings. When returning to a home that has been flooded, be aware that mold may be present and may be a health risk for your family.

Clean up and dry out the building quickly (within 24 to 48 hours - SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport can help with this). Open doors and windows. Use fans to dry out the building. Position fans to blow air out doors or windows.

Remove all porous items that have been wet for more than 48 hours and that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried. These items can remain a source of mold growth and should be removed from the home. Porous, noncleanable items include carpeting and carpet padding, upholstery, wallpaper, drywall, floor and ceiling tiles, insulation material, some clothing, leather, paper, wood, and food. Removal and cleaning are important because even dead mold may cause allergic reactions in some people.

To prevent mold growth, clean wet items and surfaces with detergent and water.

Protect Your Investment by Inspecting Your Crawlspace

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Over time crawlspaces need maintenance.

Crawl Spaces in Fairfield County

Many homes in southwest Connecticut are built on crawlspaces.  Snow load, water runoff, and rising water tables need to be dealt with to maintain your property.

If maintained properly, crawlspaces have advantages over other types of construction.

• It gets the house above the ground, an important point in damp areas.

• It is less expensive than a basement, and comparable to the price of a slab foundation.

• Duct work, plumbing, and electrical can run in the crawl space, which makes them easier to service, and move if necessary.

Items to inspect for are:

• Standing water on top of vapor barrier.

• Condensation or leaks on water pipes or ductwork.

• Muddy soil.

• Staining on walls from water or efflorescence.

• Sagging or missing insulation.

• Plumbing leaks.

• Musty/moldy or foul odors.

• Deteriorated vapor barrier.

If mold is found anywhere in your crawlspace, call SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport to make it “Like it never even happened."

Strange (but common) Places to Find Mold

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow in many places.

When we think of mold problems we equate it to damp basements and black gross mold growing on drywall; but mold is insidious and can grow in places where you least expect it. Mold is fast growing, can pop up within 24 hours of being exposed to moisture, and spreads quickly.

Here are some common places where mold forms that you might not be aware of:

• Under Your Refrigerator

The spaces behind and under your fridge rarely see the light of day, which make them a perfect breeding ground for mold. Clean all water lines and drip pans and ensure they are not leaking; even a small leak can lead to a huge mold problem. Take the extra time to check and clean behind and underneath your refrigerator.

• Chimneys

Your chimney can easily become a breeding ground for mold. Brick crevices collect water, dirt, and other organic debris. Rusted chimney caps and faulty flashing let in rain and snow, encouraging mold to grow. Replace rusted caps and fix flashing. Call a licensed mold removal specialist to remove the mold in your chimneys. To prevent mold, get your chimney cleaned by a professional chimney sweep at least once a year.

• Front-Loading Washing Machines

Front-loading washing machines are great, but can be a hotspot for mold growth. The gasket around the door on front-loading washing machines often stays wet because the door is usually closed when not in use. Add some lint to the moisture and mold happily munches and multiplies. Wipe the gasket and glass dry before you shut the door. If you spot mold, run a hot water wash with some chlorine bleach (no clothes), which will kill the fungi. Even if you have a top-load washer make sure to regularly check behind and underneath your washer and dryer to make sure there are no leaks or source of moisture. Clean out vents and lint traps to prevent mold havens, as well as fire hazards.

• Window Sashes and Seals

Condensation from windows provides the moisture mold loves, and the dirt and dust that collect provide the perfect place for the mold to settle. After heavy rains open windows and wipe moisture from the bottoms of sashes and windowsills. Replace any broken seals and if you notice any water has leaked into the wood and walls call a professional to see if the problem has caused mold.

• Air Conditioners

Air conditioning units trap dust and pollen (a good meal for mold) and grab moisture from the air. If you don’t run your AC unit at least every 24 hours in warm weather humidity in your house climbs, giving mold the opportunity to grow in AC ducts, drain pans, and on coils. Drip pans and drainage hoses on window units can leak causing mold to grow into the windowsill and dry wall. If mold grows in your central air conditioning unit you’ll have to hire a mold remediation pro to clean out the system.

If you suspect you may have mold contact the experts at SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport.

Cleaning Mold from Tiles & Grout

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Removing mold from tiles and grout can be a lengthy process, but SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport does our best to get it taken care of in the proper steps.

First, begin by scrubbing the mold off the tiles and grout. You should use a scrubbing brush along with a household cleaning product or mold killing product. There are also commercial tile or grout cleaners you can buy.

After this you'll probably find there is still mold stains left on the grout. You can use bleach to fade these stains away. Before you use the bleach you should spot test it to make sure that it won't discolor your tiles. You should also wear gloves to protect your hands from the bleach.

Apply the bleach to the grout and leave it sit for about 10 minutes. Instead of chlorine bleach you can use hydrogen peroxide if you like. Another alternative is to use baking soda. Mix it with water to create a paste and then use a toothbrush to scrub it onto the grout.

If you find the stain remains on the grout after bleaching then repeat the process. Give it some time and this should fade away the mold stains on the grout.

Fresh Year, Fresh Look with Dry Ice Blasting

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

Dry ice blasting is a relatively new cleaning process using solid CO2 pellets (known as dry ice). It is
primarily used for industrial use in a variety of applications. The pellets sublimate (convert directly from a solid blast pellet to a vapor (CO2) leaving no residue. The process is superior to sand blasting, glass bead blasting and other types of cleaning methods for numerous reasons.

SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe and Northern Bridgeport demonstrates the effectiveness of dry ice blasting on a heavily traveled sidewalk in downtown Stamford, CT.  This is a great service that SERVPRO of Trumbull Monroe Northern Bridgeport provides to many of our commercial clients.

Be Prepared For A Hurricane

5/12/2017 (Permalink)

The threat of a potential hurricane is always nerve wracking to all in the affected area. However, being prepared and knowledgeable of precautionary measures to take in the event of a hurricane can ease some the stress and panic you may be experiencing.

Having a ready to go emergency kit is key in any disaster situation. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the contents of this kit should include:

  • Map(s) of your local area
  • Tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers or pliers to maneuver utilities
  • Matches
  • Sanitation products such as baby wipes, trash bags and disinfectant
  • Dust masks in the case of air contamination
  • Plastic sheeting and Duct Tape for creating shelter-in-place.
  • A battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather radio
  • Multiple flash lights
  • Surplus of batteries (for radio/flashlight)
  • A First aid kit
  • At least 3 days worth of non perishable food (per person) and can opener if needed
  • At least 3 days worth of water (1 gallon per person, per day)

This basic list is, of course, to be adjusted and will differ person to person depending on specific needs such as any medications, pet needs, money, gasoline etc. But this list provided is a staple for a basic emergency kit.

To be aware of what is happening around you before the storm hits, be sure to frequently check the news to gather updated information on the storm. Familiarize yourself with which is the safest room in your home, evacuation routes, and locations of shelters.

During the storm the measures to take are quite simple. If no emergency evacuation is issued, stay in the safest room of your home, away from all windows and have all necessary emergency supplies on hand. SERVPRO® Expands PGA Sponsorship with PGA Fantasy Golf

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

There is an old adage: “It never rains on a golf course.” As the official cleanup and restoration company of the PGA TOUR, SERVPRO® knows this isn’t true, but rain or shine, fans follow their favorite players’ performance at PGA golf tournaments throughout the season. Recognizing the ever-growing popularity of the game, SERVPRO has expanded its relationship with the PGA TOUR by becoming the presenting sponsor of the PGA Fantasy Golf games, available at pgatour.com/fantasy.

“We know people don’t associate SERVPRO with the wide-open spaces and fair weather feeling of a golf course. After all, SERVPRO is the company you turn to when the unexpected, even the unthinkable, happens to your home or business,” says Michael Keating, owner of SERVPRO® of Stamford. “But each SERVPRO business is also a local business, there to support the community in good times and bad. Teaming up with the PGA TOUR as the sponsor of their Fantasy Golf Suite helps us build connections within our local community. We want local home and business owners to know that we are there for them ready to respond at a moment’s notice if things go wrong.”

The new “One & Done” games were launched on January 3, 2017*, but the game structure allows players to join in on the fun at any point during the current season. Each week, game players select one player to earn points for them in that week’s tournament. The PGA Tour Fantasy game is based on accumulated FedEx Cup points and the PGA Tour Champions game is based on accumulated Charles Schwab Cup points. A player may select a given golfer for a tournament in each of the One & Done games only once in each season. Since some tournaments earn a pro golfer more points than others, game strategy is based on selecting the right golfers for the right tournaments.

“With the first major tournament of the season—The Masters—just around the corner, now is a great time to start your One & Done game for this year’s tour,” says Keating. “If you ‘master’ the trick of choosing the right golfers in the right tournaments, you could jump to the top of your Fantasy league.” The top finisher in the PGA TOUR game will win a new set of golf clubs, while the top prize for the PGA TOUR Champions game is a trip for two to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, November 6-12.

SERVPRO of Stamford specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. Causes of Mold in Your Home

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

Mold is a vital piece of nature, assisting with the disintegration of natural matter and the recycling of supplements in biological systems. While outdoor mold is fundamental, mold developing inside present’s health risks and can bring about property damage. Molds recreate by method of minor airborne spores that travel essentially anyplace, even in our homes.

Despite the fact that there are hints of mold spores indoors, they require the right "ingredients" to produce mold. Unfortunately, the conditions for mold development are found in many homes: a nourishment source, (for example, drywall, rugs, and wood), warmth, lack of light, enough time to develop, and above all, dampness. Since dampness is a fundamental factor in mold development, here are the most common culprits that cause heightened dampness in homes:

- Flooding can cause a measurable amount of water into your home, bringing on serious water damage and conceivably cause mold development inside 24-48 hours. Calling an expert restoration professional such as SERVPRO promptly is your best defense with regards to mitigating water damage and preventing mold development.

- Increased humidity can happen in homes from multiple sources — muggy climate, persistent rain, cooking, showering, and so on. To help prevent development of mold growth in your home, ensure your home is all around ventilated and keep the humidity below 55 percent.

- Deficient ventilation leads to increased humidity, and due to this, mold development and different issues like indoor contamination. Try to open entryways as well as windows when viable and to utilize fans as needed.

- Leaking pipes are a typical issue in homes and should be settled promptly. In many cases, leaks are hidden from view, such as inside walls or above the ceiling, so make a point to investigate wall and ceiling stains routinely.

- Roof leaks are additionally a way for water to saturate your home and cause mold. In the event that you see water stains on the ceiling, check for water damage in the attic and have your roof assessed and repaired at the earliest opportunity.

- Condensation happens when warm dampness loaded air interacts with chilly surfaces. Condensation can be seen on walls, windows, solid floors or metal pipes. Reduce condensation by adjusting the humidity in your home.

- Basements give astounding conditions for mold development because of poor ventilation, cooler temperatures (that advance condensation), and incessant water leaks and flooding.

- Mold can also grow in various unexpected areas in the home, which can make mold remediation more difficult. For professional mold removal, as well as fire and water restoration services, contact the professional experts at SERVPRO today.

Aftermath of a Home Fire

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

Recovering from a fire is not easy by any means. It is an emotionally draining process that turns your life upset down. The hardest part comes at the beginning, when you feel helpless and are completely unsure as to how to proceed. With that in mind, our goal is to present to you the fundamental steps you need to take immediately after the fire is extinguished.

Deal With Insurance

You should already be on the phone with your insurance agent before the firefighters even get done putting out the fire. Mind you, this is just the beginning. After a few days, you’ll need to get a copy of the official “fire report” from your local fire department. The insurance agency will likely send an adjustor out to survey the damage and help you get in touch with a restoration agency, such as the professionals at SERVPRO.

If you are renting, then you’ll obviously need to contact the owner of the home. If you own home but don’t have insurance, on the other hand, then you’ll want to speak with the Internal Revenue Service. You might be eligible for something known as casualty loss.

Settle in Somewhere

Most likely, your home is currently in an unlivable state, meaning you’re going to have to find somewhere else to stay. Your best bet is to stay with friends or family. However, if that’s not an option, check with your insurance company to see if your policy covers temporary living expenses. Otherwise, contact the American Red Cross.

Before you leave, try to rummage through your home for some essential items like the following: Identification Cards, Medications, Eye Glasses / Hearing Aids, Wallets, Credit Cards / Checkbooks, Money. **Only do this AFTER you get permission from the firefighters to reenter your home.**

Turn Off Utilities

Make certain you get all of your primary utilities turned off.  Why waste money for services when you are not even living in your home? Plus, restoration cannot be performed on your home if there’s still electricity and such running through it. The risks of electrocution would be far too high.

Contact a Restoration Company

This is perhaps the most important step. You’ll need to contact a professional, full-service restoration company, such as SERVPRO. Our company is trained specifically to deal with post-tragedy damage. Below is a list of some of the things you can expect us to do:

The company will start by removing all the water from your home. During a fire, a lot of water from the firefighters hoses usually collects all over the place. Plus, fires sometimes cause pipes to burst, thus leading to even more severe flooding. The point is that restoration cannot begin until the water is first removed.

The company will then start with water restoration. Carpets, walls, ducts must be dried. Mold must be removed. Just this step itself can take a few days.

Next is the actual fire restoration. First and foremost, the company will inspect the structural foundation of your home and fix any major problems. Obviously, if a ceiling is about to crash, then it must be attended to before any other restoration efforts can be completed.

Once the structural foundation is secure, the specialists will start cleaning up soot/smoke damage, deodorizing everything (carpets, walls, furniture, etc.) and basically returning the home back to normal. If anything is so damaged that it cannot be repaired, it’ll be removed and thrown away. It’s your responsibility to let your insurance company know what items you lost.

Last, but not least, the company will clean up the remaining mess (dust, debris, etc.) and rearrange everything back into place.

Move Back In

Finally, you get to move back into your home and resume life. Unfortunately, it can take quite a bit of time before you even get to this final step. We’re talking about several weeks. The truth is that restoring a home from a fire takes a lot of time, a lot of resources and a lot of money.

Just remember to keep in close contact with your insurance company through the whole process. If all goes well, you’ll get your home back in one piece, and you’ll get your lost possessions replaced.

When you have fire, water and mold restoration service needs, give the experienced professionals at SERVPRO a call.

Saving Personal Items from Water Damage

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

One of the most common topics after a client suffers water damage, is how and what they can save from water damage.  Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer to this question. Every water damage is unique in some sense, so what can be saved is really on a case by case basis. However, here are some guidelines that you can use to make the best decision possible.

What Type of Water Damage

Determining whether the water that damaged your personal belongings is clean or contaminated will be a big factor in whether or not it can be salvaged. Obviously, if you are dealing with clean water, the chances of you being able to save some of your belongings is higher.  Even though it may be possible to restore something that is damaged by contaminated water, it is more than likely not worth the health risk that it may bring.

Porous vs Non Porous Materials

Porous materials such as fabrics, wood, and paper are very good at retaining water. This also means it increases the chance of other dangers like mold growth, and damage beyond repair. This is not always the case and if handled quickly and properly, many times these items can be saved as well. On the other hand, porous materials like marble, metal, and porcelain - among others - usually have no problem being restored. Since there is really nothing for bacteria and mold to root itself in, a simple cleaning is usually no problem.

The Amount of Time the Water Saturated

Another factor that will come into the equation of determining what can and cannot be saved is how long the materials have been wet for. The longer an item sits in water, the deeper it can penetrate. As you can imagine, this makes it increasingly more difficult to bring it back to its normal state. The perfect example of this is wooden furniture. It takes quite a bit of time for it to really absorb and become completely water logged. If you get personal belongings out of the standing water and begin the drying process right away, you have a good chance of being able to save them.

Factor in the Replacement Cost

Water damage restoration of personal belongings is no different than any other type of repair. You will always want to evaluate how much it is going to cost to repair something versus simply replacing it. Is the item you want to save really worth paying a professional to do work on it? Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.

You should also take into account that paying for restoration does not guarantee your item will be returned to its original state. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the item anyways.

If you are unsure about whether or not one of your items could be salvaged, it is best that you get it analyzed by a professional. If you hire a water damage restoration company to handle a dry out of your property, they will be able to assist you in assessing damage to your personal belongings as well. To speak to a professional water restoration representative at SERVPRO, contact them today.  They are always there to help.

Water Cleanup Tricks

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

A broken pipe is by far one of the greatest nightmares homeowners face. Even just a small broken kitchen pipe can quickly cause a considerable quantity of damage to your home. It is for this reason that you need to take care of water damage immediately.

Dealing with water damage requires seeking the help of a trained professional water restoration expert, such as the experts of SERVPRO. Before they get there, there are a few things you can do to assist in keeping the damages to a minimum. Here are a few tips:

Turn Off the Water

You might be tempted to seek out the source of the leak as your first step. This can be problematic, however, depending on the type of leak or damage. If, for instance is simply an overflowed sink, then you would just turn off the sink. However, what if a pipe that you can’t see has burst?

It’s because of reasons like these that you need to turn off the water supply as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you temporarily turn off electrical power as well. The last thing you want is for the water to mix with electrical wires!

Accelerate the Drying Process

The next step entails doing everything in your power to get your home to dry. Start by opening windows and turning on fans. This will get air flowing through your home, which will help to start drying it and also reduce the buildup of disgusting odors.

If you have a dehumidifier, turn it on immediately. It will extract moisture from the air, thus helping accelerate the drying process. Run it for as long as possible. If you stop early, it could lead to the growing of mold and mildew.

If you don’t have a dehumidifier, then don’t worry, because the water restoration experts will bring one with them. As we said earlier, however, just make sure you contact them right away. They need to get to your home as soon as possible!

Make sure you also remove rugs and other portable carpeting and place them outside to dry. Try to wipe down furniture and personal items (books, chairs, toys) as much as possible.

Pull Out a Wet/Dry Vacuum

Another step that we recommend taking is pulling out a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. We understand that you might not have one. If you do, use it to remove as much water as possible from carpets, upholstered furniture and/or tile and wood floors.

This process can take quite a while, but it’s important to remove as much water as possible. Also, make sure you focus more on wood surfaces than carpeted areas. Due to wood’s porous nature, it’s apt to soak up all the water, which in turn will cause it to become warped and delaminated.

Again, if you don’t have a wet/dry vacuum, don’t worry. The restoration professionals will take care of this for you. Just make sure you contact them immediately!

Things Not To Do

There are some things you should definitely NOT do after your home suffers from water damage:

Never leave web fabrics and clothing items in place. Try to hang them.

Also avoid leaving books, magazines and other such items on wet floors.

Please refrain from trying to use a regular vacuum cleaner to clean up water.

Avoid using electrical equipment and appliances a like television.

Stay out of rooms that have a wet ceiling.

These might seem obvious, but it’s good to know. Be especially careful with wet ceilings. They could be much weaker than you think, and the last thing we want is for a roof to collapse on you!

Final Steps

The real work won’t start until the restoration company gets there. Professionals, such as SERVPRO, possess the equipment needed to do real water extraction and repair. Part of this process will involve installing certain equipment, be it professional-grade dehumidifiers and whatnot.

When this occurs, make sure you follow the directions given to you. Usually, the professionals will ask you to keep their equipment running for a while. Make sure you stick to their schedule and do not arbitrarily turn off their equipment. This could negatively affect the drying process and make things worse.

The last thing the professionals will do is give you preventative maintenance tips. It is recommended that you follow through on these steps to insure that your home and belongings return to their former state. It can make the difference between whether or not your home ever suffers unneeded water damage again!

For all of your water, fire and mold restoration needs, give the professionals at SERVPRO a call today!

Stay Healthy During The Winter

2/8/2017 (Permalink)

Although this season is marked by jolly and wonder, there are some aspects that can burden some, either temporarily or over time. Here are some winter health tips that will keep you happy and healthy so that you can truly enjoy the holiday season in all of its glory.

  • Healthy Eating

After Thanksgiving’s kickstart, it is a common temptation to fall into the habit of eating a surplus of sugary, fattening comfort food. However the over indulging might make you start to feel like a part of the Clause family.

To stay on track with healthy eating, push aside those unhealthy comfort foods and make a substitution for something nutritious and tasty. A craving among most is food that is warm and savory due to the bitter cold outside. Most would be quick to grab a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies, but those may not be the healthiest choice. Soups or stews can satisfy that urge for warmth and flavor while benefitting you with a healthy variety of vegetables and protein. Sweet potatoes offer both savory and sweet food packed with good fats and are very filling. Pairing these foods with dark leafy greens and fresh fruit will create a perfect balance to keep you healthy this winter.

  • Exercise

Although winter deems it perfect weather for hibernation, staying indoors and sleeping beneath blankets all day won’t benefit our health. Get yourself motivated with some upbeat music and get into the swing of a revised workout routine. It obviously can be much more challenging if you are used to doing all of your workouts outside but if you happen to have a gym membership or an open space inside your home, you can quickly develop a newfound workout plan to keep conditioned over the next few chilly months.

Make sure to stretch and warm up before your workout. Since the temperature is so low, it takes more time for your joints and muscles to become ready for exercise. Also of great importance when exercising is to stay hydrated. Drink as much water as you can to keep your body a well oiled machine.

  • Keeping The Flu At Bay

During the winter, germs are flying left and right from those who already fell vulnerable to the common cold. From airborne germs from coughs and sneezes to hand to hand contact, there are many easy ways for you to catch these bugs too. To keep from getting ill it is very important to boost your immune system. Be sure to get proper vitamin intake either from supplements or healthy fruits and veggies. Vitamin C is especially helpful during the cold and flu season because it helps strengthen the immune system to fight of viruses and bacteria.

Stress can also be a major contributor of susceptibility to illness. Make sure you limit the stress of your day to day life through different tactics such as deep breathing or even meditation. Be sure to get proper hours of sleep as well to keep your immune system healthy and stress levels low.

On top of these factors it is also very important to keep the surfaces in your home clean and to always wash your hands after going to the bathroom or touching something that may be in contact with multiple people, such as a door handle or stair railing. This will further limit your chances of becoming sick with the common cold or something worse.

What is a Puffback?

1/30/2017 (Permalink)

Among the unfortunate occurrences of mishaps such as frozen pipes, air leaks and ice dams during the winter months, there is also the haywire messes caused by puff backs. A puff back is the result of an oil burner’s hinderance of ignition allowing fumes to accumulate and causes an eruption of debris to travel through a furnace’s exhaust system and into your home. This incident can cause soot to damage multiple areas of your home, especially if you have a heating installation that would allow it to travel by the means of air vents. The emission of soot signifies a problem rooted within the heating system. Although, this does not indicate that there is a need to replace the system entirely.

If a puff back has transpired, you may experience large areas of discoloration on walls, cabinets, curtains, bedding, windows and other areas, as well as an evident, strong and smoke like odor. Unfortunately the soot produced is not an easy mess to eradicate because it will withhold oil from the furnace making it diverse from soot’s common powdery form.

Most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance.  Don’t attempt to clean up the puffback residue without contacting us here at SERVPRO of Stamford first.  We will assess the damage and necessary restoration process. This should be done immediately to ensure the removal of the residue and chemicals is safe and efficient for both you and our staff.  A repair company should also be contacted to locate and correct the problem with your furnace.

In terms of preventing puff backs it may be helpful to inspect your furnace every so often to eliminate the buildup of debris and/or contact your heating company if you begin to experience any sign of soot in proximity to your furnace.

If you experience a puffback, call SERVPRO of Stamford 24/7.
